Flair & Valentine win for 1977. Now, before we go to 1978, I'm gonna go back a little bit. Since I decided to add some NWA titles to the mix, I'm gonna go back and do the big one: The NWA World Heavyweight Title. The title was first defended in 1948, but Orville Brown was the only champion that year. So, he automatically wins for that year, and we start with 1949:
Orville Brown, 1st reign, won it at a house show in Des Moines, IA on July 14, 1948, held it for 501 days, In July 1948, the National Wrestling Alliance (NWA) was founded and Brown was recognized as the first official NWA World Heavyweight Champion. His reign length is calculated from the date he defeated Sonny Myers to first claim the world championship.
Lou Thesz, 1st reign, won it on November 27, 1949, held it for 2,300 days, Awarded when Brown suffered career-ending injuries in an automobile accident on November 1, 1949. Thesz had earlier won the National Wrestling Association's World Heavyweight Championship on July 10, 1948 from Wild Bill Longson. Thesz became the undisputed champion of all of wrestling by winning the Los Angeles Olympic Auditorium World Heavyweight Championship, the remaining major world championship at the time other than the NWA World Heavyweight Championship, defeating Baron Michele Leone on May 21, 1952.
