I still think Snips point stands that a B+ on Cinemascore doesn’t translate to “Must see” but thank you for the grade information. At least it isnt video games where if a game scores a 75 it means they said it is complete garbage I was happy to get a D- in math ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

A B+ Cinemascore roughly translates to "It was ok", not "You gotta go see this one!". It's only real saving grace might be that there doesn't seem to be a huge "date night" release next weekend but even still, it's got 3 new movies to contend with. And Sonic’s actually getting good early feedback. Whodathunkit. So did Birds of Prey..

Shouldn’t have called it Birds of Prey. Marketing it as a straight up Harley Quinn movie would’ve likely done better with casual movie goers.

Taste and opinion are personal and subjective. But the point stands - B+ is not "just ok" - that would be what C means. Average. Not excelling, not failing. B is above average and B+ is one step away from great/outstanding. That was the whole point of that Daniel Bryan angle. If someone thinks Suicide Squad was just that damn good, that's their thing, not mine. I still think Snips point stands that a B+ on Cinemascore doesn’t translate to “Must see” but thank you for the grade information. And thank you for almost making it through that without being an ass.

I feel like most of the blame falls on the studio. Not even hardcore geeks know what the deal is with the DCEU right now, so imagine how confusing this is for a casual audience. We know there was a different Joker already on screen since, and it's very public that Batman is being rebooted. It's very messy. On top of that, disturbing as it may be, a huge chunk of the Harley fanbase created by Suicide Squad are still too young to get into an R-rated film. It was a super risky move to take the character out of reach for 13-16 year olds. In the end though, I think it's my first point hurting them the most. They rushed to create a shared universe, and good or bad, that's what they did. Now they're trying to quietly pull it apart and it's not jiving for people.

Definitely a lot of complaints on social media that it wasn't made clear the movie was rated-R. Hell, I didn't know myself until it started getting mentioned in reviews.
Given the R-rating seems to be based on a handful of things that could easily be toned down a notch without impacting the movie at all, definitely not a clever decision by DC/WB. Snyder may be long gone, but his "We're edgy, bro!" mentality remains.

The dick pic thing was a rumour, never actually confirmed, and I don't remember ever reading that any kind of nudity was to be shown, but also not relevant. A few thousand people reading rumours from almost a year ago aren't making up the $20 million opening weekend shortfall. All the marketing pegged the movie as a quirky action-comedy with no hint that it would be R-rated. With Deadpool - obviously the inspiration - the advertising practically shouted out "THIS IS R-RATED, FOLKS!" with multiple red band trailers and the like. And again, nothing about this movie needed to be R-rated.

Honestly, I feel that this should be a wakeup call for DC to not rely on two characters exclusively for selling things but that presents a chicken and the egg problem since, for years, that's all they have done and the casual audience is just going to want that.

I mean, I get it, they want her to be DC's Deadpool and Deadpool was R. Problem is that Deadpool comics usually are rated material while Harley comics are generally PG-13 content for the most part. Plus a vast amount of Harley fans probably are teenagers and already it feels as if they were marketing this all wrong to begin with.

Well at least their being creative in their excuse, I'll give that to them. .... Almost a thousand people have died from it in the matter of weeks. It has shut down almost all non-essential travel and socialization in major parts of the country. Hell yes that's a valid excuse.

From my own personal account when I saw it in my small city here there was myslef, four or five other English teachers (all women) and maybe one to three Koreans in the theather and the lobby was empty for a Thursday night at about 6:30. Life here is going along, but 95% of people are wearing face masks. I can only imagine how worse it is in China where there are lockdowns and the numbers are in the thousands now and growing. Sure, it may be the lack of marketing or quality of the film, but the news I think is having an effect on people's lives here.

Her school has been closed until next month, and she's more or less been urged to remain in her apartment unless it's absolutely essential she leave it.

At this point I don't think its out there to suggest there's no one root cause of the film's under-performance. The Coronavirus is affecting Chinese box office, the Birds of Prey group is too unknown to the public, the R-Rating turned away many potential teenage fans of Harley, elements of Suicide Squad the general public liked aren't in this, hardcore comic cans may have been turned off hearing the adaptational changes, and the dubious marketing cast a shadow that even positive word of mouth hasn't allowed the movie to get out of (so far).
