Yeah, probably the toughest spot any President could've been put into. I have to admire the resolve to can stand up to that and still come out of it as an honorable man. And he was a hell of a football player too. A seriously cool guy all around.

RIP, I'm surprised at how interested in his history I have become. I guess the fact that it was just long enough ago to feel like both "history" and still failr contemporary.

Nixon was a great foreign policy president, but a terrible domestic one, and not a very virtuous guy to boot. Carter was a nice guy and did what he could, but he couldn't keep the economy steady and the rest of the world didn't really fear him. Reagan was great for a lot of businesses and helped the rich get richer, but if you were a minority and/or poor, the Reagan years weren't very good for you.
The fact that Ford just kept the country steady and didn't do much of anything for better or worse is enough to qualify him as one of the better presidents of the last 50 years.
