Its the DS Port.
Slash has been sliced to ribbons, Flea was squashed like a bug, and Ozzie’s in a pickle. All that’s left now is Magus.

It’s my first time playing it, but a friend of mine streamed the SNES version on Twitch on New Year’s. And speaking of this game’s music, there’s a YouTube channel called Man On The Internet that has been doing Chrono Trigger: The Musical. Done with original voices, game footage, anime cutscenes from the PlayStation/DS ports and original artwork, with the 60 songs being released out of order. It’s been fun.

I try and try to get into that game, but never can. Secret of Mana is the game from that era that holds my heart hostage. I can't get into it for much the same reason I can't get into the Final Fantasy games. I have no patience for menu-/turn-based combat. A Link to the Past, Secret of Mana, and Illusion of Time/Gaia were my go-to RPGs from that era.

I can't get into it for much the same reason I can't get into the Final Fantasy games. I have no patience for menu-/turn-based combat. A Link to the Past, Secret of Mana, and Illusion of Time/Gaia were my go-to RPGs from that era. Funny enough I love FFVI, and don't necessarily dislike turn based games. I think it may be because it looks so similar to SoM, (Hell the main character is basically the same dude) then it... isn't. I'd just rather play SoM for the 1000th time instead. Lol

I haven't played video games on a consistent basis in more than 10 years, but I was surprised to hear there was a debate over whether they were art or not. Thought that issue had long since been settled with CT and some of the other SNES library.

Their absence in Chrono Trigger is why I've finished Chrono Trigger dozens of times, but never completed a Final Fantasy game ever. It depends for me but the ideal in my view if something like how Bravely Default does them of just letting you turn them on and off as desired. It really saves a lot of trouble. And it makes grinding in that game piss-easy because you just need to turn random encounters up to 200%, go hang out outside a town, turn on autobattle, and just periodically run back to town to heal.

If I’m not mistaken, the last Final Fantasy to have random encounters was X. XI was an MMO, XII’s system was actually a decent compromise between turn based and real time action. XIII’s was pretty much the same as Chrono Trigger’s. Enemies are on the screen and you physically interact with them to trigger the battle. XIV was an MMO. XV was real time action akin to the Kingdom Hearts series, which makes sense considering Tetsuya Nomura was the director of XV in its early development.

Only time I've ever been able to jive with turn-based combat was with Knights of the Old Republic, and even that is only a loose version of that system. Well, no, KOTOR's combat was strictly turn-based. Just that the animations gave the illusion of more fluid/real-time combat and you could queue actions ahead of time. All the meat and potatoes of the system like the turn-based nature and the dice rolls, were all in the combat logs. In a lot of ways it was fairly similar to FFXII's system except that really did have a real-time component. Interestingly enough, every mainline Final Fantasy battle system except for the first three for the NES/Famicom and FF10 had a real-time element to the combat via the ATB meters.
I also prefer Seiken Densetsu 3 to Secret of Mana. Shame we never got that game here. Though when it comes to SoM, it's a really easy game to be bad at. There's a learning curve to the system.
The thing with Chrono Trigger is that it's just a really, really well-made game. Like I don't think it does any one thing the best compared to the other stalwarts of the genre, but it does everything well. It's hard for me to pick out a single instance in the game where I was like "Yeah, that wasn't very good" except maybe one part in 65 million BC where you have to button mash. Double and triple techs, along with the elemental affinities of each character, also made for a really interesting system that encouraged you to mix and match your party for different combinations versus sticking with one party the entire time. Plus you had the time travel aspect and a not entirely linear storyline as the game had multiple endings that were triggered by doing or not doing certain things in the game.
