Yeah yeah yeah, but will Phil Donahue be welcomed back after 25 years? THAT'S THE BIG QUESTION, BABY!

Man, they REALLY did not want to have to nominate Black Panther for their precious Best Picture. I actually think it's more the younger people in charge have no confidence all the 70 and 80 year old dudes who make a big chunk of the voters will even watch Black Panther.

They need introduce a segment where they admit a mistake and make said person give back the Oscar.
Would love to see Paul Haggis have to give back the award and the Academy admit what a piece of crap that movie was.

I was reading a post about how the idea that the Oscars don't acknowledge "popular" movies is actually a more recent development. Like, Rain Man won Best Picture and was the highest grossing film of the year. Titanic and Lord of The Rings are also examples of that. I think adding a popular film just dilutes the accolade. Cause now they can ignore blockbuster films by putting them in their own category. I feel the same way about having a best animated film category. There should be one best picture, and everything can be eligible to win it... Everything.

They should hand out the following awards...
Best Picture Best Director Best Acting Performance Best Supporting Acting Performance Best Animation Best Cinematography Best Production Design (includes makeup, hairstyling and costuming) Best Documentary Best Editing Best Foreign Language Film Best Music Best Sound Best Visual Effects Best Adapted Screenplay Best Original Screenplay
Ditch all the dopey comedy bits and montages (with the exception of the memorium segment, and this will lead to a trimmed down and more watchable show.

Award shows are in the same boat as Late-night talk shows, Sketch comedy and Beauty pageants. They're all tired, boring formats that don't matter anymore. Who would watch The Oscars, when you can just go on RT to see if a movie is good? Why would you watch SNL when you can just watch dumb sketches on youtube? Why would you watch a beauty pageant when there's p**nhub?

I'm in my 40s, and as long as I can remember, people have been complaining about the Oscars rewarding artsy films instead of popular films. The same goes to movie critics who give thumbs down to blockbusters and thumbs up to arthouse flicks. Personally, I don't have a problem with that; as others have pointed out already, quality doesn't always correspond to popularity. Avatar and the Transformers films should be proof enough of that.

The new category is specifically so they don't have to put a marvel film up for best picture.

It's obviously to get casual viewers to tune in who might not know what cinematography actually is-there's more of them than there are film buffs. Me? I say put a gold star on the dvd and shut up

How about just having the Oscar's host or presenters just hand out the awards to the winners in the audience and afterwards talk about the show's hottest fashions.

The shame is that Paddington 2 didn't make enough at the domestic box office to really be called "popular" and it isn't animated, so the best reviewed film OF ALL TIME will receive zero Oscar noms. The Tomatometer is misleading, the average rating is the more accurate barometer of critical consensus. Paddington 2's average rating was 8.8 out of 10 from 199 reviews. Still a damn fine score for a damn fine movie, but it's not the best-reviewed movie of all time, and doesn't even make Rotten Tomatoes' top 100 movies of all time. Just a few of better-reviewed movies include: - The Empire Strikes Back (8.9) - 12 Years a Slave (8.9) - Inside Out (8.9) - Toy Story 3 (8.9) - Toy Story (9) - The Social Network (9) - Moonlight (9) - Gravity (9) - Jaws (9.2) - E.T. The Extra-Terrestrial (9.2) - The Third Man (9.3) - The Godfather (9.3) - Citizen Kane (9.4) - Wizard of Oz (9.4)

There's gonna be Funk Pops in the gift bag now too, Rudolph Valentino is going to unbox them during the opening ceremony

Cut the technical awards and have it go to two hours and you'll have your ratings back up. Problem is, almost all of the technical awards are already presented in some private ceremony that is badly streamed and not mentioned by the Academy whatsoever. What you see is all the "popular" awards, and I bet you that the "Summer Blockbuster" award will actually go after "Motion Picture of the Year".

People know that 'popular' doesn't automatically or inherently equal 'quality', right? Because I sure as shit can't wait, then, to see Transformers: Bumblebee get some Oscars recognition. I'd say you're already looking at Black Panther, Infinity War and Mission: Impossible, with an outside shot at Deadpool 2 and one other non-Bumblebee movie. The shame is that Paddington 2 didn't make enough at the domestic box office to really be called "popular" and it isn't animated, so the best reviewed film OF ALL TIME will receive zero Oscar noms. Counterargument; Teen Titans GO! To the Movies (or GO! The Movie, whatever you call it) was also well received by critics, but it's still Teen Titans GO!.

I thought making dumptrucks full of money instead of buckets full of money was the reward for making blockbusters?

Man, they REALLY did not want to have to nominate Black Panther for their precious Best Picture. As well they shouldn't. It's up there with Avatar and Sling Blade as one of most boring, overrated movies I've ever seen.

Just get rid of the host and their dumb jokes.
Just have presenters and have a play clock in the corner. Go over your time and a trap door opens up and gets you off the stage.
