Decent introduction episode. Jodie Whitaker did fine as the Doctor. She was great in Broadchurch too. The writing already seems to be an improvement. I wasn’t blown away but it was a nice change from last season. My only complaint is that I didn’t get to hear the end theme thanks to BBC America running ads over the credits.

The first outing for a new Doctor isn't always the best, so by first outing standards I thought this was great. I'm already sold on Jodie as the Doctor and just as importantly, the companions. Peter Capaldi's final season revived my interest in Modern Who, which was at an all time low. I'm glad that this opener kept the fire of interest burning for me. Doctor Thirteen will obviously develop her own character traits, but initially her demeanour (as well as some facial expressions) reminded me very much of David Tennant.

This "Special Edition" is just jampacked with commercials. Hard to get into the episode itself with the ad break/Comic Con clip/ad break format.

I just finished the episode and rather enjoyed myself. I think Whitakker has really nailed the role and I felt like occasionally she showed glimmers of Tennant who was one of my faves. I'm pretty optimistic, especially with Moffatt gone now. I think that he worked best when there was someone to rein him in. Once he took over he became a bit of a hack with most of his episodes containing plot holes large enough to drive a tank through. Under RTD had made some fantastic episodes though.
But enough about him. I think the new cast is quite promising and I'm really looking forward to more.

8.2 million viewers here last night. I know debut episodes always carry a few extra viewers but that is an impressive number.

That’s a line I never thought I’d hear. It popped me though. 😆

Let me get this straight, the sonic is "more advanced technology than your species will manage over the next nine million years." (The Girl Who Died) but she builds one out of scraps in a repair shop?

(The Girl Who Died) but she builds one out of scraps in a repair shop? The THIRTEENTH DOCTOR built it in a WAREHOUSE! With a BOX OF SCRAPS! Just caught up with this. Liking Jodie, like the new dynamic of having a team rather than 1 Doctor 1 Companion (Yes there's Rory, but The Doctor treated him like he wasn't there half the time). Some of the acting and exposition was a bit forced, but it's one of the better first episodes and I can't wait to see what happens.

So, was something (or things) lost in the editing at the end there?
The Doctor tricks the bad guy into killing himself (after first giving him a chance to leave peacefully, so no problem there). Then, as he's presumably three seconds from becoming a gooey mess since the bomb "destroys the foundation of his genetic code," she throws him the teleporter and tells him to "go home" which is a bit mean taunt to a dying person, I guess. Then guy who was hunted kicks him off the crane, and the Doctor goes "You had no right to do that!"
What?! A) Based on everything's we've been told, he was dead the moment he detonated the bombs. B) Even if he wasn't dead, you just gave him back his teleporter, so it's not like him falling off a great height was going to kill him, and C) Out of everyone involved there, wouldn't the random, innocent person who was made a target be the one person with the most "right" to attack the killer alien?
And it's not like there was some follow-up or involved an overall theme of the episode, so it was such a random line.

It's the ghost of Moffatt doing his best to ensure that there is at least one plot hole in his absence.

It was fine. She has the same issue I had with Matt Smith - namely a bit young so her angry voice and alien taunting comes off as cocky rather than anger or something that would really make you afraid.
Companions seem ok, the new monster was decent, her costume is trash.
I'm intrigued for more and happy that others liked it too.

So finally got around to watching this and I really enjoyed it. It's only one episode but it felt like a major improvement over what Moff was putting out over his last few years. All the characters were likeable and the show was just fun. Plus they kept it simple. That was always a major problem with Moffat, he overthought and overcomplicated everything to try to make it seem amazing rather then just concentrating on giving us good solid stories.

I am behind on my Doctor Who, I still need to watch series 9 and 10.
I watched the recap of season 8 before starting 9 again and I had no memory of any of it.
Most of Doctor Who just turns into a wibbly wobbly mess in my head not long after.
