Officially the strongest storm to hit the Florida Panhandle and the third strongest ever to hit the continental United States. Very bad Category 4.
Hope any posters in that area and along the path that leads through Georgia are safe.

Friend of mine is in Panama City because her family wanted to stay. All I can do is pray right now. This storm is horrible.

My sister and her family are on vacation in Orlando. I hope they wait long enough for it to pass by.

I don't want to make light of this situation, and I hope everyone is OK...
...but is it wrong for me to see the big coincidence of a hurricane being named Michael hitting in October days before a new Halloween movie comes out?

I live in Sumter, South Carolina and it's expected to be a tropical storm by the time it gets to us. Overall I am not concerned about it, what concerns me is how easily people panic and how quick they are to shut down schools over rain, wind, and thunder. I will say that I think weather analysts and media individuals need to start being held accountable for creating fear and hysteria. If they're wrong about the forecast just come out and say they're wrong, we misjudged, and this caught us off guard. I sometimes feel that a lot of these outlets get a huge adrenaline rush out of hyping and creating fear.
With that said I absolutely feel for the people in the Panhandle though. I definitely have to believe they weren't expecting this.

That meme has been on Facebook since yesterday. Quite surprised you haven't seen it.

It's better to be safe than sorry, especially with hurricanes. If they said that a hurricane was coming, but it might not be that severe. Then it changes and turns into a monster. People will lose their lives and then people will complain that the weather analysts didn't properly warn them.

I can't help but notice the coincidence that 3 of the worst hurricanes to hit the U.S. this millennium so far (Michael, Maria, Katrina) all share names with my 3 siblings.

Hurricanes need scarier names. Might make it easier for people to realise their severity.
The weather reports should say "the Vortex of Khazad-dum has strengthened and its unrelenting fury is now bearing down on Panama City".

I think the best case scenario is to provide honest and accurate reporting. If they're wrong then come out immediately and say they were wrong.

I'm just glad that, at worst, we're going to get the outer bands when it's a tropical storm or depression. The original track had the center of the cyclone hitting southern NJ (meaning my part of the state would get the stronger parts of the storm) as a tropical storm, but now the track has it veering out into the Atlantic around the Delmarva Peninsula.
I have a friend that lives in Tallahassee and I hope she makes it out ok. People were expecting it to make landfall as a Category 3 or a strong Category 2, so hearing it hit land as a Cat4 is scary.

Even the most honest news program wants eyes on them, and a natural disaster sells. The government, the people who actually have to respond, should be giving the clearest coverage they can in the interest of saving lives while giving a realistic assessment of the risks.
