Wow there was no energy from Smith in that Prince Ali clip.

The Smith version is fine for what it is, I guess. It’s a perfectly fine performance I’d see to promote the Aladdin broadway run on the Today Show.
Then I watch that 1992 clip and there’s so much more life and energy in it. Partially it’s because the animation is so fluid and beautifully drawn.

And that's the inherent problem to all these remakes. In a vacuum, removed from any context or knowledge of Disney animated canon, they're perfectly acceptable. But remaking the iconic entries of the Disney Silver Age and especially the Renaissance that are so beloved specifically because of the life and energy will always make the live action entries come across worse. it would have been foolhardy in the era of home video when fans could easily compare them, let alone in the internet age where you can immediately find the originals and spot the superior version.

Thing is they easily could have done things to liven up the performance. Like not having it be almost entirely a static camera angle. Give it more of a faster tempo. Take a few ideas from Bollywood to get some of the frenetic energy in there Etc. This could have worked but it doesn't look like they tried. As the person on Twitter said this is great for a mainstreet Disneyland parade they need to run a few times a day... it's not ok for the big showstopping number that basically starts the main plot.

Wasn’t nearly as bad as people are making it out to be. Not as good as the original but I’m willing to give it a chance
I still think Beauty and the Beast was awesome do I have hope for this one.

The only reason I want to see this and will eventually rent it is to see the musical performances with the dance numbers.
The acting from all the clips I've seen so far seem like 2000s era Disney Channel drek but with Will Smith thrown in as a special guest star.

Disney has posted much of Prince Ali on social media. My opinion of the singing has not changed, but is only cemented more. Just watch the animated movie, kids. We didn't need a live action version this badly. Why didn't they cast Ben Kingsley as Jafar I will never know The changing times. They're lucky there was no crippling flak for Prince of Persia 10 years ago (there was flak, maybe that the lesson taught). I thought Prince of Persia was alright. Jake and Gemma were pretty playing off of one another. Also at the time I had a super big crush on Gemma Arterton and that's when she came out with this movie and Clash of the Titans as Io

Legends of Tomorrow had an awesome Bollywood number this season. No reason that Disney couldn't bring that kind of energy to freaking Aladdin if a CW show was able to do it.

Well, that looks boring. Where's the life, fun and energy?
It looks Direct to Video.

someone boosted the tempo 25% it has a lot more energy. It still has a bunch of other issues I mentioned but still >_> also minor nitpick but it bothers me they changed a word... Friday Salaam vs. Sunday Salaam

Aaand once again, Will Smith just plays Will Smith. Like, he's technically a good actor, but he can't play a character other than the same one he's been playing since the Fresh Prince days.

I’m sad that was so bad... I once had high hopes but every single thing I’ve seen of this has stomped it into the ground.
I think I’ll just save my money and watch the original from the comfort of my room.

Yeah, this is disappointing. Aladdin is my favorite Disney movie of all time and I really, really wanted this remake to be good, but every new thing they show from it just makes me less and less excited for it.

I'm not really bothered by that. I mean, in the original movie all Robin Williams did was play Robin Williams.

and as I said earlier... on it's own in a vacuum this is fine. There's nothing really wrong with it. As a parade it would work. But putting it in context of the movie is the problem. Prince Ali is the big showstopper number that kickstarts the plot... is a showcase for the Genie to show off the full extent of his powers... and the entire point is to hype up the crowd and the sultan into introducing this unknown amazing prince. Also in the animated version Aladdin is soaking in the attention. In the live action dude looks massively uncomfortable and terrified...

I'm indecisive. It doesn't look bad enough to justify these "Twitter is EXPLODING" articles you seen on Yahoo and such, but there's a feeling of artificial fun dragging it down. Also, those elephants look iffy.

See....to me, this video comes across like he's trying to channel the Fresh Prince days, but he can't. Or he's holding back going full Fresh Prince. It's very weird. The tempo vid about makes it sound a bit better, but you've still got Will Smith seemingly playing it safe. This is all just damned odd.
