Crybabies and people looking to be offended win again. Though maybe this will finally kill the show.

So the guy who did the Apu movie did a contest for a spec script to fix the Apu problem, and the story is to have Apu and a bunch of other Indian Americans buy up a bunch of stores in Springfield? How does doing a "East Indians take over the town" story fix anything? Or is that only a stereotype in Canada?

What is this Apu controversy anyways? It's the first I am hearing about it.

If anybody finds a petition to save Apu, please let me know so I may sign it. Thank you.

What is this Apu controversy anyways? It's the first I am hearing about it. Short version - he is a stereotype. Runs a convenience store, voiced by a non-Indian doing a racist caricature of an Indian accent. Basically, a brownface minstrel version of an Indian man. It really got some attention with last years documentary "The Problem with Apu" en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Problem_with_ApuEDIT: Oh, the documentary is online actually www.trutv.com/shows/the-problem-with-apu/index.html

They could always just hire an actor of Indian descent to voice the character. That seems like the easiest option, IMO.

I mean, this is actually not that big of a deal only because I'm pretty sure Apu had already been reduced to being used very sparingly for like the past 10 seasons now (though I did stop watching like 2 seasons ago). This is only a big deal because this whole Apu mess has had people on both sides of the issue outraged.

I think the only evidence I need to see he's been a harmful stereotype for Indians is that people to this day still call any gas station ran by an Indian man a "Kwik-e-mart" usually in as horribly racist of an accent as they possibly can and think it's a very funny joke. If you believe that hasn't had harmful effects on the way people view and treat Indians in the US, you are flat out wrong.

They could always just hire an actor of Indian descent to voice the character. That seems like the easiest option, IMO. Too much effort. Besides, Julie Kavner is on the verge of losing her voice permanently and the idea of an understudy, even for a relatively easy character, is too expensive for the old guard to consider.

Oh. Good.
Now maybe the Talking Simpsons podcast won't spend 40 minutes complaining about him whenever he shows up now.

So it's easier to get rid of a character than to make him not racist?

Lisa needs to break the 4th wall and complain about Apu...then again maybe she has, I haven’t watched in years.
So many more important problems in the world today, that could use people putting effort in to change than this.

I find it hilarious that kids are triggered over this when 99.9% of them are probably not Indian in the first place.
