I'm hoping the Trial of His Life wraps up soon. I appreciate deep dives, but I'm ready for months of smaller topics. Maybe I'm just exhausted with McMahon. EDIT: That said, I absolutely loved the chat with the guy who attended the trial and hung out with the Ultimate Warrior. Spinning in a judges chair...

Yeah, it's been 5 months since the last deep dive into an old school fake fighting show. And I'm ready for a new one. That being said, the trial has been an interesting journey, the Billy Graham WWF magazine article being the undisputed highlight for me.

I'm beginning to find the show unlistenable. Deep-dive subjects are fine but they should be covered in a one or maximum two episodes. It's not unusual for episodes to last upwards of four hours, I struggle to think of any subject related to wrestling that can't be covered in those times.
For me it's gone from a show that you could listen to in the car or at the gym over two or three sessions to something that's a real struggle to listen to now. The individual PPV shows were/are great and the background research into them is phenomenal.
But when you realised you've listened to 2 hours of a show and you've barely listened to anything substantive than positioning, promotion, shilling and thanking people who've paid them money (I understand why the last bit happens), I find myself decreasingly motivated to carry on listening. The podcast has definitely got away from what made it popular, at least with me.
So far they've now clocked up nearly 60 hours on the steroid trial related shows, including the Zahorian ones. I'm sorry but it's just boring now. I used to make sure I listened to each show, pausing when I was tired or got out of the car or stopped a work out etc, only to pick it up at the same place later on or the next day. How many of their audience is still doing that? How many people are bothered about listening to 75 minutes worth of a back and forth about what was said by a lawyer to the judge in sidebar on an a technical legal issue of a trial we all know the outcome of that took place a quarter of a century ago?
Sincerely think they'll regret going down this road. And it's a shame because it was a great podcast before. But they've essentially produced two and a half solid days of content that is unspeakably dull beyond words. For my sins I've listened to a significant portion of it, I've learned: Vince's lawyer is very thorough and the prosecution lawyer inadequate and the judge impatient. SIXTY HOURS! And we're not even done.
They make decent money from patron subscribers but I'd be stunned if in the medium to long term these deep dives didn't prove extremely damaging to the popularity and ultimately market ability, of the podcast. It's no longer fun to listen to. Moreover it's not really very interesting any more.
Ironically given their "it used to be better" tagline, it's become like what Raw is now; nowhere near as interesting as it used to be, incredibly mundane to listen to and if you miss a few episodes you haven't really missed much.

I think this would’ve been better as a one-off video like Booking by the Pool or the Ubertude Era.

I will admit this has been a bear to get through, but I’m still enjoying it.

I loved all the other deep dives and thought WCCW was the best. This steroid stuff is way too much. You really do not learn much. There isn't as much humor in it and they nothing about PEDs. I refuse to pay for Bix's site but I assume he is doing a better job since he is an actual journalist. It is sad they went this route instead of Impact Wrestling or ECW.

You're right, you don't learn much at all. Not every single day deserves it's own four hour show. There is so much padding in these shows that it's unlistenable. Audiences are difficult to find but super easy to lose. I fear for the future of the podcast when they're effectively taking their audience for granted and releasing four-hour long episodes that provide nothing but inform the audience that on day 4 of the trial the Judge got a bit peeved at something. It's gone from a show that was an incredibly enjoyable, informative and entertaining listen to something which is an absolute chore to listen to. In a competitive market that's a very dangerous direction.

I've become a fan of this podcast by listening to the WCCW episodes and his Fritz impersonation which is hilarious to me. I'll wait until they finish the Steroid trial before picking back up with them.

Not only that my problem is this time it comes off as if they are mocking people for wanting to be in shape like the whole Finn Balor and carbs attack.

Not only that my problem is this time it comes off as if they are mocking people for wanting to be in shape like the whole Finn Balor and carbs attack. The mock people on The Lapsed Fan now? Man, they have jumped the shark. I've no issue with them poking fun at people who are super health conscious, or poking fun at anyone in particular. It just seems a bit contrived now. It's gone from a show that could easily go 4, 5 or 6 hours reviewing a PPV and it'd be a blast and fly by, to a show that thinks it has to deliver marathon episodes even if the subject or content of the show doesn't justify it. And as said you don't really get much information out. Some of the trial episodes if you look at their actual content have been quite frankly turgid with close to absolutely nothing new or entertaining being contained within them, padded out with outbursts from lapsed Vince and observations from the trial made exactly the same for the last five consecutive episodes. I swear they've made the same observation about McDevvit being a competent, tenacious and thorough attorney, dozens and dozens of times. Maybe even hundreds across all 60 hours of content produced so far. It's like when your friend who used to be fun to hang around has a baby and suddenly rather than goofing around getting drunk you're sat looking at pictures of his new baby and you just want to go home. That's that the Lapsed Fan has become, they've thrown a 15,000 page photo album on the table and they're going through it. "Day one of his first day in blue. This is when he first woke up. This was three seconds after he woke up........This is photo number 77 where he's still awake but we hadn't taken him out of the crib yet....." 60 hours later "Cool....so.....he's a baby, huh?" knowing there's probably at least another 15 hours of baby pictures left.

I need that magazine in my possession so I can read the article whenever I want.

I’ll agree the steroid episodes have been a bit of a drag.
But man, those AWA and World Class deep dives... so good.

Yeeeeeeah the trial series was a huge drag.
And these mid-show mid-sentence ad breaks are awful

Glad it’s over. Having to slog through hours of the same Reuben sandwich joke over and over, then being pushed to go to the Patreon site to listen to the recitation of the trial transcripts...it just feels like work.
And for the record, yes I’m a monthly patron.
