Lapsed Verne Gagne: I landed that ESPN deal by being a pillar of the community. I’ve been thirty years in the business. Since I’m the draw let’s be honest here, I’m an honest man, farm boy, I think I deserve ninety percent of the gate. I put the earn in Verne.
ESPN executive: What about Greg?
Lapsed Verne: f*** Greg. I wish his mother aborted him.

I'm listening to their Super Clash III episodes, and they unfortunately perpetuate the myth that ESPN owns the "AWA Championship Wrestling" program. Here's a picture from 2013 showing ESPN show tapes in WWE's possession. I always thought that while WWE owns the AWA tape library ESPN can still air the shows because long after WWE purchased it and was using those shows on ondemand and in dvds ESPN was still airing those shows on ESPN Classic so it would be easy for Jack and JP to confuse that. I don't know of ESPN releasing AWA DVDs, but, yes, their original deal with the AWA allowed for them to re-air the shows for a long time, maybe forever. I'm not sure why the Lapsed Fan guys were confused, though. They were using WWE Network to watch the shows they were covering, and the Network's AWA section has 2 episodes of the show, labeled as "ESPN Championship Wrestling."

I’m talking about WWE releasing the AWA footage on dvds and using it for ondemand while ESPN Classic was still airing the episodes in 2014 well after WWE bought the tape library.WWE bought the tape library in 2006 started releasing content on the awa dvd later in 2006 and in 2007 on the Mr.Perfect dvd aswell as other then in 2008 ESPN Classic started airing the AWA ESPN show weeknights it would air for awhile then they’d replace with either UWF or Global air those for awhile then go back airing AWA so it would be easy for someone that didn’t know much about AWA to think ESPN maybe still hold some rights to those shows.During that journey Jack and JP theorized that ESPN must hold some rights seeing they still were airing the shows years after WWE purchased the library as they admitted they didn’t watch AWA growing up watching those shows was there first exposure to AWA and when they get stuff wrong usually their fans email them with a correction that they make on a future show but I’m guessing their fanbase aren’t huge AWA historians and they were probably seeing this stuff for the first time aswell.

I love the stuff when Hogan is leaving and Verne offers to give him the title if he stays and gives Verne 90% of all moneys he’s ever made or would make in the future.

I used to feel bad about Verne losing the AWA and everyone jumping to the wwf but he did very scummy things to them, specially to his trainees.

WWE bought the AWA footage in 2003. I think the "Shawn Michaels: From the Vault" DVD released that same year was the first WWE production to have AWA content. Like I said, I wasn't sure how they messed that up because they were using WWE Network for this project, so a couple of ESPN episodes were right there alongside the shows they were watching.

Vince is no angel by any stretch of the imagination, but I've yet to hear of him stiffing anyone in terms of pay.

It was worse than that VERNE STOLE ALL THE MONEY OF SUPERCLASH 3 HAHAHAHAHAHAH then he complained about Lawler keeping the belt.

Vince is no angel by any stretch of the imagination, but I've yet to hear of him stiffing anyone in terms of pay. Most everything I hear about Vince and bad pay is all from 1984 and early 1985. There are a few guys from that pre-Wrestlemania (and even past it a tad) era that say they left because they weren't getting paid. What was happening was Vince was bringing in so many people that once they got there, he often felt "buyers remorse" and instead of firing them, would just drop their bookings to almost nothing (3-4 shows a week down to maybe 1 every three weeks), hoping they'd get the hint and leave on their own. He also owed a crapload of money to creditors and the like just before Wrestlemania I. He knew this was such a make-or-break moment that, in several cases, he stopped paying television stations and the like a few months ahead of the show, timing it so that if WM was a success, he could swoop in with the cash at the last minute, and if it wasn't...well, he saved thousands of dollars needlessly, right?

In the early to mid nineties he also paid bad because of the steroid trial and the kliq not drawing shit, it caused Vince to apparently losing six million dollars of his own money to cover the wwf losses. JJ Dillon was persona non grata for more than ten years because he defected to wcw during the week of Shane’s wedding because of the pay cuts. McDevitt said that it got so bad that the wwf couldn’t afford water coolers at the offices. According to Mick Foley, the midcard talent couldn’t afford to cover their expenses on trips. I’m surprised they survived the new generation era.
