It's still a fun watch. Flair looking legit flabbergasted like holy shit he's good should have been one of those things TNA noticed immediately and help people take Jay more seriously
Obviously we know what he was capable of later

My absoloute favourite anything to do with TNA.
Watching Flairs gradual decent into madness as Jay becomes Flair before Flairs eyes.
"THATS MY LINE!!!"

And Jay was rewarded by getting fired a short time later.
Flair loved so much his impression that he would bring his family and friends to Jay so he would do the impression.

MIRROR MIRROR ON THE WALL, WHOS THE FAIREST ONE OF ALL? WELL ITS YOU NATURE BOY! Ric trying to prove to the audience that Jay Lethal wasn’t Ric Flair was a magical moment.

I just remember glancing away from the show at one point while this was going on, and losing track of which one was Jay and which one was Ric. That's how you know the impression is spot on.

This should been one of those things where you come away so impressed you have to let the guy get a run and see what he can turn into. We saw him as Black Machismo and working with Flair should have taken him to the next level in TNA
This is the equivalent of when Cena talks about telling guys to give their best shots but expect the same. Flair was giving him the usual business and an animated Ric Flair is not someone everyone can compete with even then and Lethal blew him away with how good he was

You can see the wheels turning in his head like what the f*** this is good before he goes fully mad by the end

Ric legit went mad when he knew that they fired Jay. Ric liked and believed in Lethal so much that he came out of retirement to put him over.

I loved how genuinely excited Flair was during this segment. The second he realized how good Jay was, he could have went the entire night back and forth with him.

That's chemistry and that's something none of the writers will ever be able to put down on paper. Flair loved every second of it. Flow of the exchange and delivery was very humanized with lots of swing, stumble and momentum in a very natural and a good way. Again something writers would never be able to deliver.
TNA got really lucky that time cause their talented writers were making AJ be part of the Fortune instead of being the one who feuds with the Fortune. Too bad cause AJ in Fortune is all we talk about today while Fortune without AJ could have been great. Kaz and Desmond were on their own turf with flashy wardrobe while Bobby was your usual odd man.

Lethal's got so much charisma, and I think that's something people really do forget about him, or choose not to see.

Lethal's got so much charisma, and I think that's something people really do forget about him, or choose not to see. Lethal's the total package. 2-3 more inches in height and this is a dude you build WWE around, even now I think he could go there and be a top top guy. I couldn't even be that mad at Ric coming out of retirement to put over Lethal because you could see how much he enjoyed working with him and believed in him. Not many times Naitch has had that level of fire in the last 15 years.

Jay Lethal is like Samson and the second he went bald something about him just stopped clicking for me. Maybe he's better on his current run long after I've tuned out of ROH but something about the dude just isn't on like it used to be. Also this was legitimately like the best thing TNA in this era did and there's very few things that can even kind of compete.

Yea, I said it a while after he went bald that he lost the juice without his hair. Still good performer but he just wasn’t clicking with me as much anymore and obviously the high he was on when you could legit make a case he was one of the best World is gone too Still wouldn’t mind if they ever had Kofi leave the New Day and he’d be the one to replace him

This is really entertaining but also exactly why I've always thought Jay Lethal is a comedy jobber, not a main-event talent.
But it's clearly me that's out of touch. People love Lethal. To me, doing a good impression of another wrestler doesn't a good wrestler in their own right make. People loved Black Machismo's push; I was baffled that X-Division matches at the time had a guy pretending to be Savage AND a guy pretending to be Austin. Flash forward a few years and they'd put the world title on a guy basically pretending to be The Rock but that's neither here nor there...
Like, I've no issue with comedy midcarders, go nuts, but this shit got ridiculously over and I can't believe people bought it. Plus, Lethal may have done a great Savage voice but he sure as shit couldn't drop an elbow.
Seriously, what about 'he did a really funny Ric Flair impression once' says 'main eventer' to people? I can do a pretty good impression of Michael Caine, can I win an Oscar?

I can do a pretty good impression of Michael Caine, can I win an Oscar? I'm with you on Black Machismo. I felt the same with Damien Mizdow. People were talking like this was an act that was sustainable but there's really nowhere to go once the joke stops becoming funny. Though I disagree with the elbow drop, I don't see anything wrong with Lethal's elbow. I don't know if you watch (or watched) ROH but Lethal's great there. He's got a lot of charisma and he's very versatile. His first title reign with Truth Martini as his manager was one of my favorite acts. I read people say he should be Black Machismo again after All In revitalized the act somewhat, and I do not understand it a bit. There's nowhere to go with that act long term. I love the Flair/Lethal segments though, their first interaction is one of my all time favorite wrestling segments where Lethal does his impersonation and gravels when he realizes that Flair doesn't appreciate the joke and is going completely mental on him. I find Flair in TNA underrated to begin with. It's "sad" when you watch it and think that's Ric Flair, but his performances in a vacuum was so chaotic and mad, he was compelling to watch but he was insane.

One of the more frequent criticisms I've seen over the years is Jay Lethal is great when he's being Macho Man and Ric Flair, and very run of the mill when he's being Jay Lethal. I'd say that's a pretty good assessment. He's good as himself, but nothing amazing.

I thought it was good, occasionally approaching great, and certainly his best work, but still not something I'd describe as amazing.
