During the most recent edition of Wrestling Observer Radio, Dave Meltzer talked about Apollo's match with Mahal. While the match itself did not garner a great response from the live crowd in Manchester, Meltzer noted that WWE has new plans for the Superstar. Meltzer revealed that WWE wants to build Crews as Raw's 'highlight reel.' Apollo is one of the most athletic performers on the WWE roster, and WWE reportedly wants to showcase that he performs impressive moves. www.wrestlinginc.com/news/2018/11/backstage-news-on-wwe-creative-plans-for-apollo-crews-647551/Should've done that when they first called the dude up.

The problem with someone whose gimmick is, "Look at all his fancy moves!" is the second he stops one-upping himself the gimmick is out of steam. This is why Parkour John Morrison went nowhere... and Apollo somehow has less personality than Morrison does.

A look and MOVEZ! are all well and good, but you have to have something to link all that shit together, to get people invested, to make people care. And while he is jacked and has an impressive moveset, Crews doesn't seem to have anything else.
Otherwise, he's dead in the water. If they had kept him with his real-life bestie Tozawa, then he would have probably got that something apart from a look and MOVEZ, but at the moment, he is just a dude that does cruiserweight moves but is 70 pounds heavier. Not much of a hook there.

Has a 'human highlight reel' gimmick ever worked?

I just realized he’s been on the main roster for two and a half years. Kinda mind blowing considering he’s done absolutely nothing.

If they had kept Akira Tozawa with Titus Worldwide instead of sending him back to 205 live, then that had the potential to be a great stable. You had two charismatic dudes in Titus and Akira covering for the lack of charisma of Apollo, and the in-ring skills of Tozawa and Crews covering for Titus.

Or you could just give him a personality because even with all the cool moves, he’s still about as interesting as a cardboard box.

Yeah I was there in Manchester and the crowd, and myself, really didn’t give a single shit. I think Jinder got more of a response and he’s awful too.

RVD was called that, but he also had his 420 "gimmick". RVD also, while no one would accuse him of having great mic skills, has a lot of presence and personality and he has a very distinct, eye-catching look. Crews is just some smiling dude in trunks.

I truly don't get it. Titus, Crews, Dana and Akira could have been a fun little group. Not world beaters but the better than the sum of their parts.

He's never going to get over on his own, no matter how impressive they tell us he is. He's a good wrestler, but he's the perfect example of why we still need managers.

Or you could just give him a personality because even with all the cool moves, he’s still about as interesting as a cardboard box. I would imagine this creative decision in their way of conceding that Apollo lacks all charisma and so they're forced to "hide the negatives" and accentuate his strengths with this idea moving forward. Which makes sense, given the whole cardboard box reality.

Worked for Petey Williams. .....right? Petey was part of a pretty popular stable, and also got over later in his TNA run by becoming "The Definition of Definition". Unlike Crews, he actually had a character, even if it was only "cheating Canadian" then "Mini Big Poppa Pump".

Just call him Uhaa Nation again. He needs SOMETHING that isn’t disgustingly generic.

He's got the in-ring skills for it, he just needs the right opponent and the right story. Don't have him cutting long promos, just have him get over by what he does in the ring.
