Ok...what the f*** is happening here, and why does Rusev look so joyous about it?

Yall wanted Rusev to stay face right? At what cost? Well, I was hoping for an actual face push, either with Rusev Day winning the tag titles or with Rusev getting an upper card face push. And WWE need a credible babyface that is over, what with Jeff Hardy on his last legs and Rey Mysterio having no knees left. And Bryan turned heel last night, so that frees up a spot too. But nope, Rusev does nothing.
I would have even settled with him getting the US title at Mania. But no, Jinder had to take it, because reasons, I guess.

To give you an idea how little WWE cared about it, they posted the payoff/blowoff/discard match in its entirety the day it aired on SDL: Aiden hasn't been seen since, Rusev had a very random US Title match in the pre-card for Crown Jewel, and otherwise both Rusev and Lana have been relegated to Mixed Match Challenge until they can think of something to do for them, really. Smackdown as a brand in a nutshell.

(A visiting Shawn Michaels wanders by) "Honestly, given they way they've treated you, it's probably good they made you Doink."

Someone (Vince?) doesn’t like Rusev very much, I think that’s clear. Breaking Rusev Day up kind of made sense but the way they did it sucked. Like that’s the second time they have tried to use a TV storyline to make it seem like Rusev and Lana have problems with their relationship. It’s weird. Yeah, it would've been great if Aiden went full on Ciampa for the feud or brought someone in to take out Rusev but it was just so lame, and it ended on a complete whimper.

The payoff was to put Rusev in his place for getting over without the writers' permission. So, mission accomplished. They punished him by putting him in the main event of Smackdown for months on end and then a title match with AJ on a PPV.

Ok...what the f*** is happening here, and why does Rusev look so joyous about it? It was Birdie Bryan’s birthday and he felt they should make it a bigger deal so he decided to do this and Birdie was terrified.

I remember being told I was being stupid for saying this was a garbage feud that would do no one in the storyline any favors. I was right.

The payoff was Lana coming out and dancing to that wonderful theme music.

To one of the most popular acts in the company for no reason?
