I'm not currently watching WWE, but I know that Becky Lynch is making big waves right now in the wrestling scene. With her recent injury, I couldn't help but think of Steve Austin's neck injury in 1997, when he was just starting to get really hot. And in a way, by being injured, the WWF was smart enough to keep him on TV, but in such a way whereby fans wanted more of him, i.e. see him wrestle and win. I don't think Austin does as well in 1998 if fans weren't dying to see him tear shit up for those few months in 1997 when he was really starting to take off as a tweener.
If WWE can play this right, Becky should be on TV, as much as her health allows, but not wrestle. Instead, she should cause a lot of problems for the women's roster and WWE authority figures. Then come the Royal Rumble or thereabouts, push Lynch super hard and pull the trigger on a Lynch/Rousey Wrestlemania main event.

Eh, she's easily the best thing in the company now, but I don't think she's nearly at the level of Austin or ever will be. I don't think she's going to lead to a boom period for the company, but who knows. Plus, I'll be shocked if they have her beat Rousey.

Is Nia going to have her Owen 316 T shirt saying I just broke your face too 🤔 I hope not. Owen was talented and charismatic enough to pull that off and make it entertaining as hell. Nia is... Well, Nia is Nia.

IDK where the Austin comparisons are coming from I mean yea Becky is on a hot streak but Austin is an entire league of his own and transended wrestling I love Becky but she aint gonna be doing that in the modern landscape of the E.

She needs to put Stephanie down before she reaches Austin levels.

IDK where the Austin comparisons are coming from I mean yea Becky is on a hot streak but Austin is an entire league of his own and transended wrestling I love Becky but she aint gonna be doing that in the modern landscape of the E. It's more in the trajectory of her career the past few months and the fact that she's become this take on all comers badass. Also, her promos have been fantastic and I would argue she is currently the most over person on the roster male or female. She's broken through a glass ceiling and is drawing eyes. Will it have the same effect as Austin's run? Doubtful. That was part of a perfect storm of the Monday Night Wars, the feud with McMahon (which sadly has been played out over the years) and a general pop culture phenomenon. Don't get me wrong, Austin was a big part of that but he was not the sole reason that wrestling got so huge in that era. However, Becky is making waves and I can see a lot of reasons for comparisons with Austin.

Austin made wrestling popular worldwide. Austin made Vince a billionaire. Austin is the reason why we’re not watching Nitro every Monday night.
Becky well not so much.

At least with me, the Becky/SCSA comparison is strictly character based. And there are parallels, there. Expecting her to be the caliber of megastar, that Austin was, is unfair. And would be unfair to anyone.

I’m pretty sure she is from a character perspective. She’s a mix of Austin, Punk, and even Daniel in terms of character.

She’s cool and all but 1997 Austin is the most intense man in the history of the planet. It’s good they have a woman whose character is something other than a hot high school mean girl or friendly naive idiot but nothing Becky or ANYONE has done in the last 20 years has come close to replicating 1% of the believabilty of Austin’s delivery to me. Everyone these days still feels like they’re “playing wrestler” in comparison. Saying a few cute things on twitter isnt exactly Austin 3:16. The bloody visual on Raw was cool though.

Honestly, yeah, I've been thinking that. And I don't mean that she's drinking beers or gonna start a new boom period but the fact that she comes off as beliveable.
She comes off as a firey character that doesn't back down from anything and will run their mouth to anybody. They know what they want, they'll do what they have to do to get it, and they don't care who supports them. They constantly want smoke and will actively instigate a fight if one doesn't come to them.
More than literally anybody on this roster (including the ones that have real, honest-to-god combat sport experience), nobody is selling their ability, their convictions, and their angles better than Becky right now. She cares about everything she's in to an intense level that is pretty rare in modern WWE and that passion translates to the fanbase.
That's just my opinion, anyway

Y'all know damn well Austin would have been talking MAD reckless on twitter if it was around during his beef with Bret Hart, lol

Becky's great and all, but every time someone compares a superstar's rise to 1996/97 Austin, I want that person to go to YouTube and watch the "Pink tights..." Survivor Series '96 promos and think "Will my new favorite ever match the intensity and 'Dear Baby Jesus, I don't want to even be in the same state as this man for my own personal safety...yet I must watch this match if it's the last thing I do!!' feeling I got watching Steve Austin talk about sunglasses and sparklers?"
The answer is no, by the way.

Austin made you believe he would fight the entire city of Calgary just to ruin Bret Hart's day. Austin was only matched in pure intensity by Randy Savage and Terry Funk.
While I see the similarities, Becky is leaning more towards Roddy Piper in terms of Not Giving ANY f***s

Unless you were watching back then it's impossible to describe the aura Austin had. He legit came across as a sadistic SOB you didn't want to mess with. By the late 90s most people knew wrestling was a work but my God Austin made you believe it was real. He's the most intense wrestler I think I've ever seen, in his promos on Bret Hart just watch his eyes. Pure intensity, it's captivating.
Becky Lynch is f***ing awesome, she's the best act in the company and should be pushed as the top star but she's not in the same universe as Austin was.

I think the comparisons are very valid.
But the last time I said that was Kennedy so maybe don't listen to me.

She may not have the same aura Austin had or be as big as he was (I grew up watching him and I remember how huge he was), but she IS like Austin in her ability to deliver a promo that makes you believe she truly feels what she's saying.
