Did Bret have his serious issues with HBK around the point of Nash & Hall leaving, or was that later in the year into 1997? I would imagine if they did, Bret would've been the one to push the issue of Shawn being a loser/traitor (possibly against Weepy Vince's wishes). More importantly than all this crap, would HHH have lasted long enough to marry Stephanie and become God of All That Is? I can't help but feel like he would have left shortly after. Vince would have likely turned sour on Trips, expecting him to leave after everyone else did, and Nash and Hall would have wanted an extra hand they trusted to keep Shawn in line. At the time, it looked like WWE was definitely going to go under to WCW, and while everyone may say otherwise now about staying with WWE because they believed in it, hindsight is 20/20 and all that money plus all his friends over there would have been a hell of a lucrative gig.

Why do people want to see Triple H back in WCW? Shawn Michaels coming in at any point to nWo means Triple H ending up there as well. No nWo, no Monday night wars also means Trips crawling back to WCW as highest paid midcarder. No matter how he comes back to WCW the end game would have always been the same - he would have propelled himself into booking WCW. Outcome would be a zombie promotion still running today switching TV deals from Destination America to Pop etc.

It’s an interesting question. I’m not sure the WWF would’ve been in that dire of straits. When Hall and Nash left, they still had Steve Austin on the roster already playing the Stone Cold character. They already had Foley. They had the Undertaker. Many of the cornerstones of the Attitude Era are there. Maybe they just go to those wells sooner.

Well the Montreal Screwjob wouldn’t have happened so we’d be left to assume Bret Hart winds up champion going into WM 14 and there’s where Austin becomes champ, so the timeline works and that feud certainly works, so WWE is on a good trajectory either way.

Al Snow would absolutely have been faux HBK, while the real deal would have drank himself to death alongside Scott Hall over in WCW.

I think we could have gotten some sort of DX/NWO hybrid group. We know that Shawn was a terrific heel once he turned later in 1997, so him cranking it up a notch to be in the NWO would have been interesting. I think Hogan might have gotten that Sting role instead though, or some version of him going to a darker place but not turning heel. That keeps him away from going over these guys until the time is right. And he would have kept working out hangin' and bangin' and had a decent tan, brother. Fixed.

I would have probably gone with Taker/Mankind as the title feud and built to Austin winning the title from the winner. The uncomfortable truth about HBK is that during the time when he was WWF champion on and off it was the only time when the Fed was #2 behind WCW. Once he got hurt in 1998 and Austin won the title, Raw beat Nitro within weeks.

Back in the Prodigy chat days covering this timeline (1996-98), Eric Bischoff would go on and answer questions. Somebody asked him (think in 1997, after Shawn "lost his smile") if they would ever sign Shawn Michaels. Eric has stated "We don't really have a place for Shawn. I keep hearing from Hall and Nash about getting this guy, but I'm really not interested."
I mean, he's not really wrong. You see how he's been acting for the previous few years in the other company - not to mention hearing stuff from Hall, Nash & Waltman - would you really want a headcase like that? He's already got a handful with Hogan.

Vince would be very blue writing sad poems each night and forcing Michael Cole, Mark Henry and Kevin Kelly to read them aloud for him live in front of a sold out crowd. And he keeps calling Triple H Shawn a dozen times. He would even sometimes confuse Skip as Shawn, until Sunny corrects him. Jim Cornette will, go figure.

If Shawn had gone to WCW, he would be dead now, having drank/pillpopped his way into an early grave alongside Scott Hall. He would have drilled right through rock bottom with his drinking buddy, growing more and more toxic and frustrated as his efforts to play politics don't work as Hogan is just so much better at it than hd is, and neither he, nor Bischoff rated Shawn... And as we saw with Bret, that'll kill you dead.

Then the WWF would have been a much better product.

I'm talking hypotheticals, both guys were in a bad state without the other around to enable their worst impulses, it would have been ten times worse for both had they been together in an environment as chaotic and toxic as the WCW lockerroom.

I imagine Vince would lock himself up in his office and spend his days endlessly crying his eyes out. He would have def kept Bret and Wrestlemania 14's main event would have been much better

Maybe also like Waltman, Shawn comes back to WWE, and Vince puts a clause on his contract: DON'T FORGET IT, YOU'RE HERE FOREVER!

Shawn has never drew anyways. No big loss really. Hes basically the AJ styles of the 1990s. Great worker. Not much else. He never put asses in seats or drew eyes to the product. Austin/Rock/Foley/Vince are what drew. It was funny watching Bret/Shawn fight for the top spot and Austin took it from both of them. LOL. If there was no Hogan, the NWO probably would have fizzed in a few months. Hogan turning heel is what made that run
Even if Shawn went to WCW, they were so mismanaged and threw so much money at people that didn't deserve, they wouldn't have survived anyways. I can't believe Ted Turner opened up his checkbook to some snake oil Salesman like Bischoff when they didn't turn a profit in their ENTIRE existence You didn't' turn a profit for 8 years so you give some guy with no real track record an open checkbook? Huh??
