Come to that, whenever I watch WCW, he always throws to David Penzer in the ring, but calls him some nickname I can never quite make out. Always wondered what that was. Pretty sure you're thinking of ''Lonsman'', which is a term of endearment that Jewish people use amongst each other. Kind of like saying ''my brother''. THANK YOU! That has bothered me for years.

Mean Gene is hands down the best backstage interviewer EVER. There will never be a more recognizable face. And WWE have had plenty... Todd Penttingil, Todd Grisham, The Coach, Kevin Kelley, Steve Romero, Savannah, Charli Caruso off the top of my head. Renee is the only one that comes REMOTELY close. I’m more shocked that he was only 76 if anything. Dude looked like he was in his mid-50s back in the 80s. RIP to an absolute legend. Sadly another wrestling icon from that era has left us. There’s not many left and personally I’ll be broken when Hogan and Flair leave us. They’re the two big ones remaining. And the biggest of the big. Vince. The sad and simple fact is this - Hogan, Flair and Vince are really all that’s left of that era that ran from the late 70s into the modern age. And that time is running out. Sooner than later, we will be glad for the time we had rather that the time left. For now... take a deep breath and pray that at least where pro wrestling is concerned, the year is done taking.

PWInsider is reporting that WWE are flying in Ric Flair for RAW, so he’ll likely be doing his own, less problematic, on-screen tribute to Mean Gene as well.

I'm glad someone clarified that as well, I was watching a WCW show the other night and heard him say that and couldn't figure out what he was saying.

I'm go on the record and say that pervy wanker Gene Okerlund in WCW was massively underrated.

My favorite Gene interview was with Savage at Halloween Havoc where they trade shots at each other's facial hair.

from YT :
Scene at the pearly gates: Mean Gene: Bobby Heenan, it's so good to see you! I can't beleive you waited all this time for me! Bobby Heenan: Yeah yeah, cool it will you, Baldy? You wanna tell these people who I am? I've been standing here over a year and they say I'm not on the list! St Peter: Is this man with you, Mr Okerlund? Mean Gene: Well, we worked together at a bunch of places but I don't know... Bobby Heenan: You don't know? Cone on, Okerlund, Jack Tunney is in there and he owes me 50 bucks! Monsoon is behind this, I know it! Monsoon, from inside the gate: I filed an appeal, Brain! This is supposed to be heaven! St Peter: Go on in, Mr Okerlund, while we sort this out. Mean Gene, vanishing into the gates: Put that cigarette out!

Somehow, I'd forgotten one of my favorite Mean Gene moments - him calling Sgt. Slaughter at the WrestleMania 20 HOF segment "a reeeeal American hero." One of the rare (maybe even the only?) times WWE ever let slip acknowledgement of his life as a GI Joe....

Yeah, he had to stop doing stuff for the WWE a few years back, and Lawler says that hes in really bad health now and may have had a stroke. It was on his podcast and he was being deliberately vague (likely to protect his friends privacy) but yeah, not good.
Favourite Mean Gene moment... anyone said the Gimmick Battle Royal? People praise The Brain, but Okerlund is a perfect straight man for him throughout that segment.
Also, with end of an era stuff above (and yes, it does feel like the stars are blinking out one by one): before Hulkamania and the 80s, there really were 4 contenders for the Crown of Greatest Living American wrestler: Flair, Harley Race, Dory Funk Jr, and (my dog in this race) Terry Funk. And, at time of writing, by hook or by crook, somehow we have all 4 still living and breathing today.

We've still got some people WWE needs to use more in interviews and documentaries - Terry and Dory Funk, Stan Hansen, Harley Race, Bob Backlund, etc. - all the more reason to document those stories and celebrate their careers while they're still here.
