Crowd was heavily and emotionally invested into the main event That's why I see it as a bit of a winner. I don't think it was a MOTY contender, not even close, but I think it was a good example of knowing your audience and playing up to what they want.

I don't really agree with your stance that Naito has been booked poorly, but I respect your opinion. But please understand, when you always put "Lol" in a post, it does come across as very patronizing. Gotcha I'm sorry dude, I don't want to fall out with you or anything, and I know you're not doing it on purpose. Just wanted to point it out.

It's telling that Suzuki got pinned in the tag title match

It's telling that Suzuki got pinned in the tag title match It really is, along with him being on the preshow of WK. I still think we're heading towards ZSJ taking over leadership of Suzuki-gun and the two of them feuding (how cool does Sabre-gun sound??).

Looked it up and the main event was a homage and reference to the Terrorism in Sapporo incident where Fujiwara attacked and brutalized Riki Chushu during his entrance in the 80s

Taichi rides an interesting line with being a skeezy heel and being a big fan of tradition/history - very similar to Naito.

Like, I can get why some folks don't like him, but I think his character work sets him apart from some of the other guys. His look probably doesn't hurt.

The main event wasn't an all time classic, but it certainly had it's moments and they booked Naito as the ultimate underdog babyface. I am interesting in where 2019 leads for Naito, where 2018 he was kind of stuck in limbo.
I loved the Heavyweight tag team title match, New Japan finally seems to be headed in the right direction after a pretty good World Tag League. Evil and Sanada are the right team to lead the division.
On another note, it is interesting what is going on with Tenzan and Iizuka. Will we see the old Iizuka for his retirement match or at least some glimpses?

Taichi has a fun heel character, but damn he loves to stall a lot. Once he takes off the pants he goes into wrestler-mode and then his matches pick up a notch. It was a good match though.

Also, poor Yoshi getting no-sold by the Ace Powers when he wanted to shout.

I imagine Iizuka will be a hybrid of sorts, kind of how he acted during the WTL match with ZSJ/Taichi. People can hate on Iizuka all they want, but some wrestlers dream of getting the reaction he got for a damn sleeper hold in Korakuen Hall.

Interesting enough New Japan just loaded a match with Tenzan/Iizuka vs the Most Violent Players.

That's a nice history lesson for those curious as to why Iizuka is closing his career with Tenzan.
Also, look at those Young Lions. They are adorable.

I believe there was also a young Mitsuhide Hirasawa (aka Hideo Saito aka Captain New Japan aka Original Bone Soldier).
