Smackdown 2's pretty solid for arcade-y fun. Pity about the load times, though. I don’t think anybody made it past the first ppv because of the f***ing loading times. I dusted out my old copy and played a Royal Rumble. The load times are appalling

World Tour and Revenge are what got me into WCW. I think it was a similar case with a lot of my friends back then.
I’d always have the Frankenstein’s Monster turn heel and become Hogan’s lackey, just because he looked ridiculous in an nWo shirt.

I remember all the previews leading into the release of Revenge was that it would have all the wrestlers entrance music so when I got it at launch I was disappointed for a bit but that disappointment fading quickly due to how awesome the game was.WWF lucked out landing that license when they figured everything out and all the bells and whistles were in those games while WCW jumped to EA and those games weren’t good at all. I remember at that time it seemed like the PS1 was cursed to have terrible wrestling games and I also remember magazines like Gamepro claiming Nitro would be the greatest wrestling ever because it had the nitro arena, the nwo and run-ins their previews were so glowing you thought the game would be great so I bought it on launch and it was a turd. Yeah the PS1 Wrestling Scene was pretty damned Bleak The Smackdown Games were arcadey fun but compared the the WCW/WWF games on N64 it was no contest

Me:I hit a move and he fell down..I hit another move and he fell down again...I won...I unlocked Rick Fuller. H:That’s so cool. M:I won again I unlocked The Barbarian. H:I bet revenge doesn’t have The Barbarian? M:It does he’s one half of my tag champs there quite decorated. H:Does it have Fuller? M:Nope. H:I told you that game sucks! M:I just unlocked Larry Zybysko and Nitro Girl Kimberly. H:Holy shit I need this game!

The saddest thing is that the Sony games, while not without their charms, still lagged behind the AKI games in terms of playability and fun, and it ended up that those style of games are what ended up sticking around.

So, here’s why that is. When WWF/E whatever had to pick who would be developing their games for the then “next gen” systems, they based their choice on sales numbers. The PS1 had a 3:1 userbase over the N64, so SD and SD2 on PSX sold much more units than WM2000 and No Mercy did on the 64. Despite all the rave reviews and critical acclaim of AKI’s engine, they lost out to Yukes simply because of sales numbers. It’s maddening yet fitting because its WWE business decision making in a nutshell.

It’s maddening yet fitting because its WWE business decision making in a nutshell. Was it possibly due to N64 games being more expensive than PS1's? Well ya, that too. But think about it, 32 million people owned an N64. If one in 3 bought a WWF AKI Wrestling game, that’s 10 million units sold, with approx $50 million in revenue, since N64 games MSRP’d at $49.99. Disregard the over 3 million copies of AKI WCW games sold on N64 because that wouldn’t have shown up on WWE’s bottom line. There were 100 million PS1 users. If one in 3 bought a Yukes Wrestling game, that’s 30 million copies, with $120 million in revenue of the PS1 games being $39.99 at the time. Neither developer sold 1 in 3 to their respective user bases. Even during the boom period when these games were released. WWE took a shortsighted look at what franchise was bringing in the most money had the most sales and rolled with yukes. We all feel the ramifications to this day for it. Edit: Sales Totals N64 WrestleMania 2000 1.4 million No Mercy 1.9 million Approx. $165 million in revenue PSX SmackDown 1.9 million SmackDown 2 1.87 million Approx. $148 million in revenue So despite AKI grossing WWE more money, they went with the higher sales in Yukes. I understand that the profit margin was exponentially higher on PSX games, the 64’s cartridges upped development cost insanely but still. How do I facepalm emoji on here?

I went with a Nintendo 64 instead. But I will tell you that I was enticed to get a PS1 for Nitro after reading the strategy guide for it at Walmart. I remember I was intrigued by how much of the roster was in it, then came the more off-the-wall unlockable characters like Santa Claus, T-Rex, a snowman, etc. As for Thunder, I already an N64 at that time and didn't get it, but I had figured that it was just Nitro with more people on the roster.

That’s pretty much how I felt about Thunder it was just more nitro and the N64 games were just so much more fun to play and I could get my non-gaming friends to play those games while I wasn’t a fan of nitro & thunder’s everyone has the same move set minus their finish it didn’t matter if you pick Lee Marshall,Kimberly or Santa Claus they wrestle exactly the same as the actual wrestlers.

i didn't watch wrestling at the time and i didn't want to pick some jobber to go up against Hogan and Flair when i played with my friends, so i always picked the Black Ninja to avoid being made fun of. i still got made fun of for always picking the ninja. if i'd known Black Ninja was supposed to be Great Sasuke (and if i knew who Great Sasuke was), i would've smarked them smarky smarks up their smarkin' ass for mocking him! I didn't watch wrestling at the time either, and usually went with either Chris Ben-oyt, Hannibal or Glacier Glacier, but why? That's why!! BOOM!
