a great main character, despite being an angsty shithead at times. His development over the game is great and I think his romance with Rinoa is one of the best ones that a FF game has had -Ragnarok is a badass airship and the story sequence with Squall and Rinoa when you go to rescue her is so good. I had to borrow the third disc of this game from a friend, because mine had a tiny scratch on it, that somehow kept causing the cutscene where Squall rescues Rinoa from the spaceship to stutter and freeze. I must have replayed that cutscene fifty times, just willing it to get to the end so I could continue playing. I never liked it quite as much as VII, though. The characters just didn't resonate as much, and I felt the storyline was a bit muddled (as if VII's made complete sense!). But it was still a great playing experience.

Could never wrap my head around how the junction system was supposed to work.

What I remember most is that it was surprisingly easy to play the game, and this was in my early "really kinda incompetent" phase of RPG playing.
I was certainly a bit befuddled about the junction system, and ran into some trouble around... first Fujin and Raijin fight, I guess? Then I figured out that certain spells boost certain stats better... like that one wind spell can't remember the name boosted HP quite a bit. It was learn as I go, more or less. I didn't mind using draw to get spells from enemies, though I was certainly inconsistent at it, missing a few summons.
Hell, Squall had his second weapon by the end, third at best. Irvine did have his best weapon, and so did Zell, but pretty much Irvine did all the dirty work. Aura, then AP ammo, AP ammo, AP ammo, AP ammo, etc. Use all those mega-elixirs as needed, taken from converting the Bahamut card. Beat final boss on first try. That boss that fused with Rinoa was far more troublesome.
I did get help from guides, but I had help with a guide for FF7 as well, and I had a harder time with it.
Also, triple triad was lots of fun. But damn Cid at the orphanage taking my useful cards...
