Interesting to hear his take on the long standing rumor. And I had forgotten or never heard of that Val Kilmer one.

I have to give Will points for being totally honest and humble about this.

I honestly feel that I am the only person on God's green Earth that actually liked Wild Wild West when not even the cast seemed to have enjoyed it.
And I can see why Smith turned down the pitch when the brothers really put it across like that. Probably could have done with some practising it beforehand.

IIRC Sean Connery turned down the roles of Morpheus and, later on, Gandalf because he didn't understand the pitches. After the success of Matrix and Fellowship of the Ring he vowed to accept the next role he didn't understand the pitch for, and made League of Extraordinary Gentlemen... the failure of which prompted his retirement.
That sad end to a legendary career aside, the thought of Connery spitting out Morpheus' lines or shouting the line "YOU SHALL NOT PASSSHHH!" cracks me up to this day.

Didn't he turn down Django too? Like, Tarantino wrote it with him in mind?
Also, with Connery, I would have loved to see him as Bricktop in Snatch. Apparently, Guy Ritchie wanted him for the role, but Connery hadn't seen any of his other work.
So Ritchie gets Connery a copy of Lock, Stock, & Two Smoking Barrels. Connery watches it while Ritchie waits outside. Connery comes out after watching it, walks up to Ritchie, and says, "That was a very good film. But you couldn't afford me." 😕

I think if Will Smith did yes I think the finished product would have been different, not saying Smith would have been wisecracking through it, I just think the tone would have changed with him on board

That said, now I kinda want to see him in a Wachowski movie. I feel like the closest we've got to that is Winter's Tale, which... isn't especially a compliment, but it's hilarious.

I've only seen clips of a Winter's Tale and... yeah, though the clips I saw I thought Russell Crowe as bad in them more so then Will.

I wasn't so much picking on the acting as saying the movie is batshit insane. It's entertaining, but just, ridiculous.

The Wachowski's are women, but OK.
Or was that later?

The Wachowski's are women, but OK. Or was that later? Way later. Will was pitched The Matrix in 1997, Lana transitioned in 2008, Lilly in 2016.

Yeah, while the graphic was I guess reflecting what they looked like at the time of the pitch, I like that Will still said "Wachowskis" and not "Brothers" at the end, that was class of him.

He's too smartass for Neo.
Neo needed to be confused and bewildered by the circumstances he found himself in, and nobody does that better than Keanu Reeves with his surfer dude voice and attitude.

I mean, it's silly, but it's fun from time to time. And yeah, I'm kinda glad Will Smith didn't take the role of Neo. Hindsight's always 20/20, but I think it wouldn't have had the same impact.

Will Smith has turned down a lot of really good roles over the years, a lot of times it's because he's super concerned about being family friendly. It's why he wouldn't take Django even though it probably would have brought him back to the main stream again.
