I really hope he didn't fake this. But something kinda stunk about it from the get-go. If he faked it, he should get the book thrown at him

If this does actually turn out to be staged... yeah, he's going to jail for filing a false police report. Very few people are going to want to work with him (and if he wasn't being written off the show he absolutely is now.) and it's going to make people jump to any time someone actually is attacked it thinking it's faked. I mean yeah, his career is over I guess (I’d never heard of the dude before this) but how severe is the punishment for filing a fake crime?

my mind also immediately went to Morton Downey Jr when this happened but Morton Downey Jr was a piece of shit and I wanted to give Smollett the benefit of the doubt until more facts came out.

They have other stuff they could be doing so they usually take filing a false report pretty seriously. to quote a law blog I googled.... so if the place he is treats it like a Felony he's really f***ed. if it's a misdemeanor I could still see a judge charging him more severely than an average person.

I'm still going to wait for an official statement from the Chicago PD because similar sources that said it was a hoax yesterday were firmly rebutted by official statement. But if it is true that this was staged, it's going to be really disappointing to say the least.
And yes, if this was staged it's definitely a crime. Not sure how severe the punishment would be, but between filing a false report and the police using time and resources to search for the perps, I can guess it wouldn't be a slap on the wrist.

There's nothing to "gloat" about. I think it's awful that he wasted the time and resources of a whole lot of people presumably to gain sympathy and attention for himself. That's the thing. I refused to even entertain this because I mean really, it sounds like the kind of insane theory a sandy hook truther would be running their mouth about. Taken objectively it sounds utterly insane that someone would do this. That's why we have to work with facts and let those involved actually release info so we can see these develop. Like, as a group in any setting you can follow whatever story but no one "knows" anything. There's people who want to be right for many reasons but that doesn't dictate the actual reality of the situation. Any assumptions, stupid ass arguments, battlelines and cliques over these stories, it's all pointless and leads to division. It hurts us as a whole. We comsume news wrong which is why I avoid it usually. I'm not even joking, unless I stumble upon a story I don't hear about ANYTHING until I click around our ridiculous ass forum. Largely because I can actually tell people to STFU and not get carried away here. If I could tell CNN and FOX NEWS that I might actually pay attention to their insanely biased narratives. I end up being a centrist in these situations and I don't even mind it anymore.

Guilty of a hoax or not this is a prime example of the just how terrible the media is currently in the US.

It hasn't been officially stated that it was staged.
There were rumors yesterday that were also shouted down pretty quickly by the PD.
Te one thing keeping me from believing it's faked until it's confirmed by the Police is What does he have to gain from staging this?
It was pretty blatant it would be found out.
From all accounts he was NOT being written off the show...
there is literally no visible gain for him to fake it.

If this ends up being a hoax, does that mean the hate letter he received was fake or was perhaps instead motivation for revenge on his part? Along with now giving people even more ammunition to not believe people when they bring forth accusations of hate crimes etc. He also just vilified and perhaps motivated violence and retaliation against an entire race of people and political leaning, based on nothing. This entire case is nuts.

If he staged it, all he really did was make it more likely that people who actually go through something are less likely to be believed. That's some bullshit.

I don’t think his show, in the wake of an attack, is likely to acknowledge “oh yeah he was totally gone next season”.

Could be attention/mental illness driven. Could be cover for a drug deal or hookup gone bad, or some other thing where the truth is less comfortable than a lie. Could be a real crime by these two guys but staged as a hate crime, because they just don’t like Smollett after working with him. The truth will out either way, and for reasonable people it should take nothing away from genuine hate crimes. That’s the last iota of attention I give this story because it is clearly being given an inordinate amount of attention by the ratings driven news due to the celebrity/political nexus it strikes, and by screaming heads on partisan news and international bad actors on social media to cause division.

The thing that always gave me pause, about this, was that it took place at 2 in the morning during some of the coldest weather in US history. And this guy runs across two people that recognize him and that happen to have a noose and bleach. Not impossible, but I do think it was implausible.

Faking a crime is pretty nasty, because you just wasted a lot of resources and bore false testimony.

Guilty of a hoax or not this is a prime example of the just how terrible the media is currently in the US. For reporting a story? The issue here is that a ton of people seem to have accepted a fantastic story completely at face value and attacked anyone who thought there might be more to it.

To be fair there's nothing that's fantastical at all about "gay black man is a victim of a hate crime". Its perfectly believable.
