What's the worst unofficial or unauthorized biography you've read? My pick is "Never Fade Away"- an unauthorized biography of Kurt Cobain... ...that was rush-written and released only a few months after Kurt died. The author clearly didn't verify anything and either had awful sources, or just made things up (or both). It's a shameless, exploitative release.

When I was in second/third grade I was a huge Power Rangers fan and got Power Rangers everything, so when an unauthorized Power Rangers biography popped up at my local super market, I copped it with the quickness.
It started seeming really familiar with a bunch of information I'd already heard.
One cross reference later, and super-sleuth seven-year-old me discovered this unauthorized biography got THE ENTIRETY of its behind-the-scene info on MMPR from their TV Guide cover story a few months prior. Just slightly reworded like a junior high student copy-pasting an encyclopedia entry for a book report.

It's mostly about Ross Perot and features excerpts from the Oliver North trial. Oh, you meant "unofficial".

Oh, here we go..
DANCING WITH DEMONS. About Dusty Springfield.
W.O.A.T.
And the joke is, it was touted as the authorized biography. May as well been otherwise. Too much dwelling on her private stories, and what they did do professionally had a ton of mistakes. That it came a year after her death made it all the more out and out exploitation and an unfair look at her as a person and performer.
Almost 20 years and it is still unforgivable.

there was a Curly Howard bio I read years and years ago, one of the main claims the book made I remember was that Curly wrote the first draft of The Godfather....the book was trash.

Apparently there was a really bad Jean Harlow bio too...one that made her out to be some kind of floozy.

Took a college class in Sociology Of Sports where we had to read Ty Cobb’s auto bio. Mostly accurate but framed to not make him a total racist asshole. It was interesting.

Took a college class in Sociology Of Sports where we had to read Ty Cobb’s auto bio. Mostly accurate but framed to not make him a total racist asshole. It was interesting. Interestingly, Cobb wasn't really racist. People thought he was racist because A. he was a miserable douchebag, B. he was from the South, and C. his own autobiography, which was ghostwritten by a guy named Al Stump and filled with mistakes, half-truths, sensationalism, and other errors. Ty Cobb tried to get the autobiography stopped and even threatened to sue its publisher, but he died before any of that could play out. There was also another sensationalized biography about him that described a couple of violent incidents with black men when one of the men was really white and the other's race was unknown.
A really good, more recent biography that came out about him disputes that and if anything he was one of the earliest known proponents of integration of black players into the majors.

In a movie... there was a bio-pic about Brittany Murphy done on the Hallmark Channel. In the movie, they showed that Brittany was fired from "Happy Feet 2" because of her partying lifestyle and an addiction to prescription drugs. She wasn't in "Happy Feet 2" because SHE DIED before production started.
