Comparing these two movies, Desperately Seeking Susan and Who's That Girl?, these 80's screwball Madonna comedies, we have compared her albums before, let's compare these movies.
First of all, there are simlar beyond being 80's Madonna comedies, they start off with Madonna's lover getting killed and her getting mixed up in the murder one way or another, and the Madonna helping some 80's yuppie into changing their lives around to a more adventurous lives. And a key is a big part of the plot And had some great Madonna songs in these movies. "Into The Grove" and "Causing a Commotion" I can put up there with any great Madonna song.
Desperately Seeking Susan gets the edge in directing, Susan Sidelman I don't know what other stuff she has done, but I assume directing movies is something she used to, oppose to James Foley who is a music video directing.
Also DSS gets the edge in supporting cast, you had at the unknowns like John Torturro, Laurie Mitchaff, Steven Wright among others, a very loaded cast. Mark Blum a very under rated does a a great job of playing the sleesy jerk husband. One more note, I am pretty sure Seth McFarline saw this movie, the house keeper she is a live action Conswala.
I do think Madonna was more comfortable in DSS, she wasn't ask to do much acting wise, which is the best strategy to use her in movies, Just be her cool 80's self. WTG was trying a little too hard to be funny. And Susan is a way more cooler character than Nikki, Susan was a character if you a kid or teenager in the 80's you probably emulated and wanted to be like. I don't know who in their right mind want to be like Nikki, this over the top cartoon character.
Who's That Girl does get the edge in budget, I mean it was made by Warner Brthers oppose to Orion. It was prettier to look at, at the same time I think part of DSS charm was its low budget. If they remade DSS with a high budget, it would not be as good.
It is funny a critism DSS gets it is very slow, it is comedy it is to surrel and suttle, while WTG is way over the top and going at a lightning spead, it is obviously a comedy.
Logic tells me Desperately Seeking Susan is better overal, though be surprised if you go and read reviews form places like Amazon, Who's That Girl? movie does have a lot of fans and people who prefer it over Desperately Seeking Susan, which does make me ponder.
