Todd's got a definite point that pop music, or music in general, isn't 'big' anymore like it used to be. (Incidentally, music critics been saying this stuff for like 8 or so years now.) As for this song somehow going to #1? It's not the worst song of recent to make it there. The song's not bad overall.

I feel like one of the big reasons music doesn't feel big anymore, is because the music channels stopped giving a f*** about music. MTV, VH1, and BET don't do shit about music. How they still have the VMAs is baffling.
Because you can watch whatever you want whenever you want on YouTube or other services, there's no big unveiling of videos or anything like that. There's no making the video or MTV Diary. No TRL (at least not the good one). No video countdowns. The music channels have NOTHING to do with music.
A channel that calls itself "Music Television" sure loves to show Ridiculousness, Catfish, Teen Mom, and other horseshit shows. Just change the "M" to an "R" for Reality Television. Although I can think of a better "R" word to describe the shows they put on 24/7.
Music is still good, even great at times. But it's true, nothing feels important. The VMAs used to be can't miss, now, who cares? And for all three of those networks to just up and quit on music is sad. There's still an audience out there who will watch music themed shows.
But hey...some teenager who doesn't know how to wear a condom or put her ass in the air is having their second or third kid. That's what the people want to see. 😞
