So there’s a lot of chatter comparing Becky to Austin, which I totally get. The big difference? The commentary.
Something that really added to big Austin moments was J.R, 100% rooting for him and losing his shit, “Stone Cold! Stone Cold!”-ing it until he almost lost his voice.
It’s clear Cole is no J.R, but the major difference is that both Cole AND Graves were heavily against Becky attacking Ronda and Charlotte, and it was only Renee who was on her side.
So, I dunno, I think it takes away from it a little, but if that had been Austin attacking HHH and the Rock while in crutches J.R would have been losing his mind..and it really would have added to the moment.
Or am I just overthinking this?

The difference between Steve and Becky is I'd like to take Steve on a candle lit dinner.
What?
I said a candle lit dinner.
What?
A candle lit dinner.

That was weird last night, Cole was heeling out on her almost as hard as Graves, the actual heel colour commentator, was.
He’s got a whuppin’ coming.

To me the most major difference between the two was that Austin reflected the cultural zeitgeist of Gen-X. I don't think the character would have had the same mainstream appeal any other time.
Becky doesn't really have that. She's not a clear representation of any clear modern day social trends. Instead like a Daniel Bryan, her appeal is still very niche to pro wrestling fans.

She reminds me more of CM Punk than Austin.
But the more Cole rants about how she shouldn't be there and she should be arrested the more popular she's going to become, so I like that. It's just not as fun when the dorks on commentary are all like, "LOOK AT HOW COOL THE MAN IS!"

But then I have to ask, what even IS the modern day social trend? I feel like the zeitgeist is so fragmented that it’s way harder for one thing to become this goliath that EVERYONE is into than it was in the late 90s.

I think they probably realized Cole is a wiener.
JR for better or worse always seemed to tap into something genuine, be it hype or when he got bored and would mock a bit.
Cole trying to hype Becky would just make her seem cornball.

IMHO, Becky has moved from Austin (though the elements are there) and she's more Piper & Magnum TA.

Michael Cole is lame. Not NEVER-ENDING knee issues lame, but generally unpopular. Stuff he endorses is normally corny and bad.
WWE sees this. So Becky no buena.

'Me Too,' I guess for one, just off the top of my head. I mean, just because there isn't anything that could easily be interpreted into a pro wrestling gimmick now doesn't mean that's always going to be the case. CM Punk probably got closer than anyone else to becoming something like that in 2011.

I was having a brief talk with a friend about this and for me one of the biggest differences atleast to me that will always keep me from ever comparing Becky to Austin on any level is that Becky's act....is just that ...an act there I do not feel a hint of legitamecy in that Becky would absoloutley slap the heads off of everyone.
Where as Austin...everytime he walked out you felt and knew that there wasn't a gawd damn thing anyone could do and would storm the gates of hell to beat the ass of anyone who crossed him and you believed it every single gawd damn time.

Apparently Becky's the nicest person ever IRL, but I do think there's a lot of the real person in the current character. She's been genuinely frustrated with the way things have gone for her in the company, and that's why her promos are so good. Austin's intensity just can't be matched, though.

Here is a massive problem with making Becky Lynch into the next Austin: A ton of Austin fans were the redneck, blue collar type of wrestling fans who on no level would give the time of day to women's wrestling. Who is the target audience? Say what you want about the Attitude Era but various wrestlers had a definite demo they were appealing to. DX was more of the Gen X sort of thing, those who enjoyed the rowdy rabble rousing. Austin appealed to the blue collar rednecks who hate their boss. The Rock at his best kind of appealed to a cross section, but in particular I'd say sports fans who enjoyed the trash talking modern athlete. Mankind appealed to the misfit crowd who weren't exactly part of the mainstream. Taker and Kane appealed to the wacky horror/sci fi crowd, Taker also the goth crowd. Later on guys like Angle, Edge, and Christian were there for the dorky geek crowd. Hardys appealed to the teenage girls. Even guys like Shamrock, Blackman, and Severn appealed to those who liked legit tough guys, so if you enjoyed MMA or martial arts those guys were for you.
