Crimson Shadows, Blackguard, Borealis, Lutharo
Date: Friday March 22nd, 2019
Venue: Coalition in Toronto, Ontario
I forgot that I’d seen Lutharo before. I’ve seen so many bands now that their name on the poster didn’t even ring any bells for me. They’re pretty good at the whole Arch Enemy, female fronted melodic death metal thing. Not my cup of tea but good for them. They tend to do a bit too much posturing for the cameras and the crowd.
Borealis were really not my thing at all. They were good at what they do but they were way too uplifting for my liking. I prefer to be spat on and called a dirty pirate hooker.
Ah, Blackguard. 2011’s memiest band. I only saw them live twice in their heyday but I think both times were within five months of one another. They weren’t bad live but their one album I have is crap. But I digress: THEY’RE BACK, BABY! It took them f***ing forever to set up. Hey Blackguard, you’re playing some dive bar, not opening for Nevermore! Their singer has (thankfully) shaved his head. They were a lot less “pirate” than they used to me. They sounded like every other band rather than sounding like every other pirate metal band. They had lots of energy and they crowd was rabid for them. It’s probably the biggest crowd and the craziest show I’ve seen at Coalition. But they didn’t play This Round’s on Me. f***ing blasphemy.
Crimson Shadows actually weren’t bad at all. Their sound got a little same-y towards the end of their set to me but every other band tonight sucked so much more that they won out. I’d see them again if they’re at a show I’m going to but I wouldn’t go to a show with the sole intent of seeing them.
This show f***ing sucked. It’s still fun going out. It beats sitting in my basement drinking by myself.
