He’s not wrong about the fluctuating weight, Joe in TNA would go through periods of letting himself go. I mean he’s always chunky, but he could ever between athletic chunky and just chunky chunky.
He’s dead wrong on the promos.

Joe had a pretape in March which ended with the words "They have spoken", so yeah, he was s'posed to have something to do with it. His role was nixed, allegedly for, of all things, him still getting cheered for beating people up. Now, him getting replaced by Abyss because of the suspension is most likely wrong, because Abyss had started in with "They have spoken" prior to the suspension even happening. The argument is that the kidnapping was to set up Inmortal, it did not. Joe just returned without explanation about what happened. His return was six months before Inmortal started. Was this pretape done in the months before BFG 2010? They made a mess of it, certainly, but the kidnapping was originally meant to help set up Immortal. The pretape aired March 29th, over a month after the kidnapping, and IIRC was the first documented instance of "They have spoken" being said on Impact. Abyss didn't start in with it until several months afterward. Additionally, it was Bischoff who brought him back onscreen in April.

So they tried it out saw it sucked and then used it with Abyss later? Well Theyrreee Herrrrreee wasn’t any better.

"Samoa Joe's promos were one dimensional" says man who put world title on Abyss And who wanted to make Tank Abbott the champ and who made Dave Arquette the champ. Tank Abbott could have been a legitimate champion, guy had that "I'm for real" intensity like Goldberg did and legitimately he could have knocked out anyone in the locker room. Problem with Abbott as champion would have been build up of course cause Russo wanted him as instant champion instead of him going from the bottom of the barrel and adopting wrestling moves and combining it with his straight shoot fighting style. It could have been a wonderful story of a street fighter becoming a wrestler and collecting a belt. Of course something like that would take over a year to do which doesn't comply to Russo's shoot now reason later mentality.

I'm willing to bet that Joe getting nixed for still getting cheered when he beat people up is true. It lines up with the other thing they had going to set up Immortal at the time, which was Sting's excruciatingly bad heel turn. That was also in March, and it got dragged out for over half a year. For some reason, Hogan just loved Abyss, which is likely why he got the nod after Joe. Hogan once seriously said that Abyss could be TNA's Cena.

He also said that Garrett Bischoff was the future hahaha Although I think that after the green lantern saga, Hogan soured somewhat on Abyss and he got depushed into a henchman.

I counted 8 "bros" is this snippet. I'm not sure if that's a lot for him or barely any.

Two things Vince....
One.... if all he can do is that he's going to kill you and then loses.... maybe don't book him to lose? I mean that's your damned job...
but more importantly...
yeah he had those promos... and the crowd still f***ing believed he was going to f***ing murder people even if he won or lost... maybe run with that anyway? Joe is the type of guy like Jericho that is so good at the talking bit he can lose 100 times and still be credible.
I also highly doubt Bret never said he was going to win when he was going to lose... because that would be a tell when he was winning or losing.

Anyone NOT know that dude's weight was gonna be the number 1 answer?
So weird too, cuz a svelte Joe would look way less likely to cave your shit in. Him being a big dude has always worked for his character.

I'm sometimes in awe of how amazing Russo is at not being able to recognize aspects that make certain characters work.

"Samoa Joe's promos were one dimensional" says man who put world title on Abyss And who wanted to make Tank Abbott the champ and who made Dave Arquette the champ. I get the point for both ideas, though. On the plus side, Tank Abbott showed that he had both personality and a willingness to be flexible with his image as the 3 Count superfan. Sure, he was still Tank Abbott, but as a transitional champ it wasn't the worst idea to take a brief stab at making him someone that could possibly use the title to get over, much in the same way that the NWA tried to use a brief (4 whole days) title reign to get Tommy Rich over. Now, had they tried to give him a year long reign in an effort to get him over, that would have been a bridge too far, but winning at a PPV and dropping the belt two Nitros later? That would not have been the worst idea. Actually having David Arquette not only win the title but successfully defend it? That's an asinine idea. Simply awarding him the title in the cockamamie way that he won it? It's not the worst idea since they needed to cross promote their movie and the fact is that it was DDP who was the one fighting the only other real wrestler in that match (Jarrett) that match and Arquette won the title by pinning Bischoff, which at least protected both DDP and Jarrett in the process of generating buzz for their shitty movie. Had Arquette came out the next show, acknowledged that while it was a fantasy come true to win the title, he had no business holding it and legitimately endangered himself trying to defend it, and then ended the promo by vacating the title and promoting his movie, that would have been fine. It's not ideal from the wrestling perspective, but I am looking at it from the cross promotional perspective.

On some level I understand what Russo's getting at, but its still dubious thinking that an over, skilled, and well spoken talent (that was loyal to TNA for while no less) wasn't pushed properly because of the philosophy of "No fatties please." And yet what's one of people's most enduring views from TNA? Scott Steiner WHARRGARBLing out "HE'S FAT!!!" in reference to Joe. a) Scott Steiner's delivery was fantastic b) Scott Steiner was a rambling heel that was portrayed as an absolute moron
