Sad so much was destroyed, but the parts of saving the art and artifacts and that there wasn't a total collapse? Without getting into specific, non-FAN-approved talk, that's the miraculous part.

A construction worker may have accidentally started the fire. My god, how sick do you think that guy feels?
He might be the French Steve Bartman. Haha.

This is devastating. I'm in no way religious, but the loss of hundreds of years of history and culture in just a few hours is absolutely devastating. Hats off to the firefighters who managed to save as much of the Cathedral as possible, that's phenomenal work.

Honestly interior looks pretty good for what happened.

I was lucky enough to see it a few years ago. It was beautiful. This is tragic. I'm glad only a portion seemed to be damaged.
There is a joke out there about the catholic church coming under fire with the public in recent years, but even this seems a little too on the nose.

Morning in Paris, the city awakes To the bells of Notre Dame The fisherman fishes, the baker man bakes To the bells of Notre Dame
To the big bell as loud as the thunder To the little bell soft as a psalm And some say the soul of the city is the toll of the bells The bells of Notre Dame
I could think of no other way to start what is easily the most heartbreaking moment of my life since 9/11. No hyperbole, truth here. Something very deep and profound to humanity, be it history, art or faith is smoldering ashes right now in Paris.
The sense of loss is beyond words. People the world over, not just in Paris, are hurting. Fault is irrelevant, blame is meaningless. It will not bring Notre Dame back, not as it was. And that is worth the tears and pain we all feel right now.
But the faith Notre Dame symbolizes what this week is about. Yes, we will hurt. We will die. We will mourn and be afraid for what we have lost. But in the darkness will come a light. We will rise and we will begin again in the morning. So is the Easter story. So it must be, it needs to be in Paris. Norte Dame May be a ruin right now. But it need not remain a ruin, but a challenge. To rise again and continue on for history, for faith, for art, for the world.
So, here is a riddle to guess if you can Sing the bells of Notre Dame What makes a monster and what makes a man? Sing the bells Bells Bells Bells Bells
Whatever their pitch You can feel them bewitch you The rich and and the ritual knells Of the bells of Notre Dame

The weirdest thing is that the Al-Aqsa mosque in Jerusalem also caught fire today, thanks to an electrical problem. Thankfully it was contained before it got far, but of all the days for something like that to happen.

Seeing how little of the interior is actually damaged, much less destroyed, is somewhat miraculous.

The top view really just makes you shudder with how much devastation you're really seeing. Of all places for the gates of hell to open up, a church?

Absolutely heartbreaking to see. The silver lining is that a lot of the religious artifacts and icons were saved by the firefighters, so not all was lost. My deepest sympathies to the people of France; I’ve heard of people crying and singing hymns in the streets, and I don’t blame them.

Seeing how little of the interior is actually damaged, much less destroyed, is somewhat miraculous. I think we owe firefighters a big one here as it could have been even far, far worse than it is had they not managed to control it so quickly. From what I understand, it was mostly wooden parts that burned off and fortunately, it didn't manage to reach any of the critical parts of the structure. The cathedral still suffered heavy damage but the worst was certainly avoided.

The anniversary of, among other things, the Boston Marathon bombing, Abe Lincoln's death, and the sinking of the Titanic. ... Yeah, April 15th is a bit of a bitch.

The southern-facing stained glass window may or may not have been damaged or destroyed, but aside from that the damage is nowhere near as bad as it looked to be.

It is a relief to see it mostly in tact. I'm prolly still not gonna sleep well tonight though with those images from this afternoon fresh in my mind though.

Unfortunately, the wooden parts of the interior are all gone.
