The anniversary of, among other things, the Boston Marathon bombing, Abe Lincoln's death, and the sinking of the Titanic. ... Yeah, April 15th is a bit of a bitch. And Tax Day this year.

I don't think its a coincidence If it turns out to have been deliberate, they'll break out the guillotine to deal with the culprits. It's such an upsetting sight, an eight hundred year old building burning, and even though there are lots of parts of it that are newer, it's still almost as old as France itself, and one of the most iconic buildings in Europe.

It's miraculous that the rose windows were spared. It was tough to see thru all the video feeds yesterday if they were intact or not - after the roof collapsed you couldn't tell since the scaffolding were so visible thru them - so to know that they all survived (with, like, only 1 window pane lost) is a blessing.
Reports yesterday were saying that the smoke was first detected onsite about 10 minutes after the church closed to visitors. VERY scary, and even suspicious. Investigators are looking at everything so speculation is baseless. The moment I saw that renovation equipment it made total sense to connect the 2.....hopefully that's the case. What's damned scary is that the official fire alarms weren't triggered until 2 hours later, at 6:30pm Paris time.

Some early estimates say it might take decades to fully repair the damage done. They're also still checking it for any weakened spot in the structure, though everything appears to be okay so far. Many historians are understandably pissed off, especially as many of them warned about safety hazards and alerted the authorities about it, only to be met with shrugs, and are livid that the government can immediately unlock tens of millions of euros for repairs now, when there was supposedly no money for maintenance on one of the most important historical buildings on Earth for the years and years during which they pressed them to upgrade safety standards. Honestly, it feels like it's systemic apathy towards culture that's to blame to this destruction. Do we know if it was a deliberate attack yet? Saw reports of 10 churches getting attacked in one week in France. I don't think its a coincidence There is zero indication of foul play. Any claim to the contrary at this point is baseless propaganda. And if it were an intentional attempt to destroy the cathedral, it would be really dumb to try and do so by burning a stone monument, let alone starting the fire near the top of the building and in only one place. Speaking of, there has indeed been one apparently criminal fire last month, and five acts of minor vandalism back in February, but the claims of dozens of attacks in a single week can most politely be described as a grotesque exaggeration. Generally speaking, be extra careful of any rumours coming out about this. There's already a lot of conspiracy nuts spewing bullshit all over the Internet about this, because of course there are. And yes, 90 % of it IS racist, how did you guess? And there's a lot of plain old misinformation, like claims that the rose windows were destroyed, or that you can see people looking at the fire from the top of the roof on pictures of the fire, because some people with serious issues can't tell the difference between giant statues and actual people. Anyway, remember, kids: always cross-check the sources and when in doubt, check Snopes out!

I've posted this a few times on Discords I'm in and I think it's worth posting here once you see speculation about probable causes and whatnot. From a journalism major: don't listen to Twitter or unsourced social media sources on causes, or even news personalities in the minutes of breaking news. Everything's jumbled and confused, and no one's really got their shit straight. Plus some people are going to push hoaxes for political agenda or just to be assholes. Any speculation about this being intentional without any real proof or official statements about it being such a thing is just reckless and motivated by paranoia or bigotry. So wait for official sources to say things. Right now, the official sources say this was likely an accident due to where the fire started and how it spread. There will be more thorough investigations to be sure, but I seriously doubt there's any foul play from what I've read as the Parisian Prosecutor's Office have outright ruled out arson or terrorism. Speaking of the restoration: www.sfgate.com/news/article/3d-maps-rebuild-notre-dame-fire-assasins-creed-13769593.phpThere are some really good reference points to help with the rebuilding process. Late art historian Andrew Tallon made heavily detailed 3D maps of Notre Dame just before he died. And, amusingly, Assassin's Creed Unity can be of help, too, as that game had its own very detailed take on Notre Dame.

Honestly, it feels like it's systemic apathy towards culture that's to blame to this destruction. The rigid secularism in France is why the church had to raise the money themselves (around $6.5mil) for the refurbishment that was going on. The French government was not going to give them a dime. Separation of church and state in France is very much a thing, much moreso than it is here. Now, or rather last night as the news cameras were descending on Île de la Cité for the press conferences, the French govt is getting directly involved in leading a massive international fundraising campaign.

Oh, I definitely just shake my head at these conspiracy theories right now of foul play.
Also, while we wish it was not this way, it always takes a tragedy for some people to open their checkbooks because mostly ego.

Hopefully the reconstruction schedule will be slightly faster than the construction of Sagrada Familia.

Hopefully the reconstruction schedule will be slightly faster than the construction of Sagrada Familia. They're going to finish that any decade now. But it is a stupendous building to look at, and the inside is perhaps more spectacular than the outside.

I maintain that when completed as Gaudi intended, it will be the most spectacular building ever constructed by the hand of man.

I think so too, and I'll be planning to visit again as soon as it is finished.

April 15th is not a very good day, it seems. On the positive side, it is also the date of the liberation of the Bergen-Belsen concentration camp, Jackie Robinson's major league debut, and the founding of McDonald's. (Yes, I know some may argue about whether or not that last one is a positive or a negative.)
