Didn’t really resd through the whole thread, but I have a couple questions. Harper wasn’t a complete jobber. He won the IC title and even won the tag titles at Wrestlemania last year and held them for a decent amount of time. How long was he not injured for? Wouldn’t they have brought him back eventually like they did Wyatt (who I don’t think was even injured?) and asking for a release publicly probably wasn’t the smartest of moves. But I agree that they should Of just let Harper go.

Harper requests a beach vacation. WWE refuses, drains the ocean.

If he’s not married to AEW or something couldn’t he do the Del Rio thing and just work with AAA, CMLL, or some other big foreign promotion like NJPW?
Del Rio is no example to follow true, but I thought that was a cool thing he did to get around the no compete clause the first time he was released. Then he went way, way, WAY off the rails.
Also, I’m sure Harper doesn’t want to risk burning bridges by doing such a thing. But if he doesn’t do something like that he risks spinning his wheels for another year in some place he doesn’t want to be and athletic primes don’t last forever.

His IC title reign was really short and they gave him maybe one promo. Sadly, his solo runs would just start going and they'd throw him back in a team or undercut him. I can see why he'd look at where he was last year or even the year before, look at where he is now, his age and say something has to change.

It depends on where he is in his contract. Del Rio's plan worked because the non-compete clause is ridiculous on its face and he basically dared them to come after him over it; with Harper, it may not be a matter of the non-compete but actual dates in the contract, in which case it's not a non-compete issue, it's a "you're still under contract" issue. Granted, this clause is as ridiculous as the 90 day non-compete, but it might be harder to challenge.

There was also the added thing if his pre axxess match is to be believed while waiting to be used since February backstage people would ask him when he was going to be cleared to wrestle.

Send him to NXT or something to work with the newbies and teach them some shit, if you don't feel like using him on the main roster for whatever stupid reasons.

WWE: Ok, so everyone is breathing down our necks about this Independent Contractor stuff since John Oliver did that expose on it. What should we do?
Also WWE: Let’s publicly refuse our ICs’ requests to leave and add MORE time onto their contracts for dubious reasons.
Unthinkably also WWE: Genius!

I understand their protecting their assets and they have the right to have their contracts respected. But the whole adding 6 months thing just makes me sick to my stomach. It is so petty.
Someday the whole "independant contractor" thing has to be put to court and changed.
I wished in this case that a bigger star whether it's Orton or Reigns would call Vince and say "stop screwing around, release Harper".

What if this is all a work? It's certainly possible, but it seems like a very strange thing to do after Dean left and Sasha's off.

If they ain't letting him go then Sasha has no chance. Cody & co has the old man rattled I think otherwise he'd be more than happy to trim the wagebill. I maybe misremembering but I believe with Rey the issue was he was on the bench (dodgy knees) but wanted to get away to wrestle but WWE didn't want him getting even more banged up...

Harper requests a beach vacation. WWE refuses, drains the ocean. Worse then that, Harper can't listen to Billy Ocean for 90 days. Caribbean Queen, no longer sharing the same dream.

There really is no way around it or really even much more that needs to be said other than this is absolutely and completely disgusting.
As a long time fan of Luke's, dating back to his Brodie Lee days in CHIKARA, I feel for him. Dude deserved better than he got and he deserves better than this.
I believe at one point he had an actual white collar job, back when he was working the indies before Japan took notice of him. As much as it would suck, hopefully he can figure out something for his family if he ends up sitting out.

This is going to be how the WWE does business from now on, and it sucks. Because he brought out his feelings to the public, he's going to sit at home for a year not doing what he loves. Just to be an example. Punishing anyone for speaking their mind truthfully, as long as it hurts no one else, is honestly bullshit to me, especially if you're stuck doing something you don't want to do anymore and your company has no solid plans for you. Honestly, if I were Luke, I'd take that time and use it well. Take their money, Heal up, get in even better shape, and look towards next year as a new start to his career. Hopefully the wrestling world will be ready for him by then. He should have gone done a Warrior at Summerslam 91 to leave immediately. Edit - reading things like this, I am glad Jim Helwig got Vince McMahon over a barrel and f***ed him.

What if this is all a work? With another promotion starting officially next month, and stock prices way down, this would be the worst work they could do right now. Especially with the exodus of talent over the past five or six months, and the rumored unhappy talent.

So Bastion Booger can just go into Vince's office and say he is not happy and be granted with a release but Jonathan somehow can't? Sole reason why this happens is the superstars that sell out to Vince over their colleagues. None of them have balls to say to Vince hey all of your green is so great but why don't you use it to employ the whole roster and once you do that you will have me/us as well. As long as the core game is still about covering your own ass things like this will continue to happen. So it's wrestlers fault by the end of the day.

I just don't understand it; I understand that it's the WWEs right to extend a contract based on dates missed due to injury but Harper is clearly unhappy and isn't being used. Why would they do something that is going to destroy morale backstage?
