I feel that since the Switch, Nintendo has done away with some of their worst practices, and overall been more consumer-friendly. They got rid of their YouTube Program, the Switch is the first console of theirs to NOT have region-locking, and they allowed crossplay when Sony didn't.
What do you think has caused this turnaround?

Nintendo is a very conservative company in regards to gaming trends and changes; some times it helps the consumer in regards to the lack of micro transactions or incomplete titles that needed patches just to run properly. Other times its a pain when it comes to online services and access to older content.
In that respect I think the failure of the Wii U was significant in regards to Nintendo realizing that the same casual market that made the Wii so dominant simply wasn't there for its follow-up console and that their best chance to come back was truly embracing the more dedicated gamer market. They had to finally be willing to let go of older stodgy attitudes about what their platforms should do and realize there was a vast market of people that wanted to play on a Nintendo console, but needed the confidence that it was something beyond an interface gimmick like motion controls or a touchscreen.
Switch has been working well because the appeal lies in its convenience and that the company avoided the Wii U's mistake of having a weak first year which prevented the console from ever really having momentum.

I’ve just learned never to count them out. They have ways of capturing the imagination that I don’t think Sony or Microsoft really ever will.

It also helped that when times were tough it was the people in charge of Nintendo that was taking the hit financially in order to keep staff moral from dropping.
I mean there was hardly any stories of divisions being shut down or mass layoffs and because of that they were able to pull through and hit it out of the park with a great new console and games.

Iwata was someone who was a rarity in not just the game industry, but corporations in general: when something underperformed or outright failed, he took the hit and held the executives' feet to the fire, not the regular workers.

Yeah that’s the thing. Iwata may have eventually gained the role of an executive, but he was always a game developer first.

The Switch is the first system I've had to buy multiples of because everyone wanted to have their own. I have one (Smash Ultimate variant) and then each of my older kids have their own. Everytime they announce something for the Switch its like their saying "Here's everything you always ask us for on one system, stop asking for shit"

I bought two Switches in a span of 48 hours because my wife and daughter couldn't stop fighting over who got to play at what time. It's going to get even crazier once Mario Maker 2 comes out; the system is like the DS all over again, and I'm all for it.

Many things make Nintendo stand out of the industry, one of then is they always adapt from their failures.

In a way it's nice because my kids tend to play together more, especially Splatoon 2. Their 10 and 9 and while they'll fight over games if they are in the same room, Him in his room, her in hers, They play better together. Mario Maker 2 is one of those games I'm gonna have to buy three copies of. I've only had to do that with Smash Ultimate and the Let's Go Pokemon games so far

I'm constantly amazed at what the Switch delivers. It's got damn near everything I'd want a modern console to have.
It's not region locked, so I can easily play games from here in Japan and from the US.
Digital games aren't just the same 8 and 16 bit stuff I've bought over again over again. Many of them are arcade and Neo Geo ports, games I never thought I'd be able to own and play legally.
They seem to release at least one or two must-have titles every month or so. And those must-have titles are freaking great. Breath of the Wild is probably my favorite game of all time. Mario Odyssey is fantastic.
Being able to play everything in handheld mode is absolutely wonderful. I've never had thing docked since I bought it.
The online thing is cheap and provides a bunch of classic NES games, for when that's what I need.
It's just...great. I've gotten more use out it than any console since the PS2.

I had hundreds of people tell me they thought it was just an accessory for the Wii. The name being too close and the marketing really hurt.

My XBox One has been collecting dust since the switch came out and when it was 1st announced I would never of thought that.

I had hundreds of people tell me they thought it was just an accessory for the Wii. The name being too close and the marketing really hurt. the Marketing after the initial launch even started having "We already have a Wii." "no it's an all new system!" added to them to get people to realize it was different. I somewhat get why they probably felt it was ok to name it something similar... since the NES, Super NES, Gameboy(all of it's variations), Gameboy Advance, etc. but they didn't differentiate it enough nor make it obvious that the gamepad was not an accessory. That said I think overall the Switch was much closer to what Iwata and company wanted the Wii U to be.

That said I think overall the Switch was much closer to what Iwata and company wanted the Wii U to be. There was the famous joke doing the rounds after the Switch's launch. You can look at the Wii U two different ways. 1. Nintendo's greatest home console failure. 2. The most lucrative open beta in history. On the subject of the Wii U name, I met a couple of people that didn't get it was a new thing. Like, these people were actual gaming fans/followers. Nintendo flubbed the launch on it something fierce, though the concept was hardly as easy to sell as the Wii. I recall it was some 3 months post-launch in Ireland/UK where the did a run of marketing finally emphasizing it was a new console and not just something new to do with your Wii.
