He'd be seen as a guy who clung on too long, but I think his pre 85 'workrate' matches would get more play.

The rumour I have always heard was they wanted Taker vs. Andre at Mania 7. Taker said it himself during the recent shoot interviews with his pastor. Pardon?

I notice no one is saying "longtime color commentator."

I notice no one is saying "longtime color commentator." I can actually see Vince putting Andre on commentary if he absolutely nothing else for him and Andre wanted to be on camera. At least Andre would know the wrestlers and the holds and storylines which is better than some of the celebrities they've used. Vince would probably even make it into a storyline to embarrass Jim Ross, as in he's being replaced by Andre.

Considering his flubs leading to and during the Main Event.

Oh ok then that he was supposed to have a match at 7. The rumour I have always heard was they wanted Taker vs. Andre at Mania 7. He also cut promos for appearing in the 1991 Royal Rumble and was rumored/myth has taken hold that he was going to win.

I think the rumor results from him not being in any condition to be able to be thrown over the top. I can believe it but I also think Hogan would have to win to send the fans home happy. Perhaps Andre walks over the top and eliminates himself to fight Undertaker to the back setting up the WrestleMania match.

Probably as a guy who hung on too long assuming his health allowed him to get in the ring a little longer

Andre was a babyface coming off of WrestleMania, so it would have been a babyface win.

If the technology was there that would allow dude to live a full life, the whole trajectory might have changed. Andre would have been an exponentially better in ring competitor, and would potentially still be around. Who knows how the business would have been shaped given those circumstances?

The thing is, the technology was there. Andre could have had surgery to treat his acromegaly, just like Big Show and Lars Sullivan had. The surgery was available in the early 1970s. There are some accounts that Andre was first told about his condition in the early 70s while in Japan. He definitely was told about it when he was hospitalized in the early '80s with a broken foot. He declined to have the surgery, reportedly because he thought he would be losing what made him marketable. If he had had the surgery in the early 80s (or especially in the early 70s if it's true he learned about it in Japan), then he likely would have lived much longer.

Probably like Bruno Sammartino. A legend largely ignored by WWE as he fell out with Vince McMahon only to be brought back into the fold by Triple H.

The problem with Andre is that they exaggerated everything about him in order to make him appear even more impressive than he really was, which was already pretty damn impressive. Andre died right before Giant Gonzalez, Kevin Nash and Big Show gained prominence... all guys who ranged from Andre's height to being much taller. So, would they try to protect Andre's true height from being exposed or would they use Andre's stature to put over how big the other guys were? Pretty hard to maintain his image as the alpha giant unless they just made a point to keep him away from those other guys. Andre wouldn't work with them. He was notorious for hating other giants in wrestling because every other giant in the business was taking money out of his pocket basically. Not to mention he'd have been well retired by now and most likely in a wheelchair his body was just too big for his frame and could not support his weight.

If he was alive, had the surgery early and was healthy, he'd put over Yokozuna big. And at Mania X, he'd be the one congratulating Bret Hart solidifying him as the leader of the new generation. I for one would be a dedicated listener to The Eighth Wonder of The Podcast World with Conrad and Andre. Conrad: Rumored innuendos regarding Bad News Brown... Andre: (Gets up and walks out) Conrad: We'll be right back...

But he wouldn't have necessarily been in a wheelchair when Nash, Gonzalez and Big Show were making splashes in the business. He was pretty crippled up, but still able to walk around and have matches to an extent just months before he died. Granted, it's not like he would have been having matches with Nash or Gonzalez in WWF, but it doesn't seem so outside the realm of possibility that they might have been seen standing close to another giant, especially Nash at some point, especially if Andre continued to work for Vince in some capacity. It's a series of big what ifs, but it does seem most likely that he would have ended up completely disabled and disappear into his reclusive lifestyle.

Andre, to me is on my Mount Rushmore of wrestling. he's been gone 26 years and the other day, I noticed someone suggest they change the name of the Andre battle royal.
He's Andre the Giant!
His legacy is lost on many that never saw him when he was alive and only have stories and video to go by, much of which are his down years.
It saddens me that not many today remember what an incredible figure he was, and instead mention that he wasn't a perfect person.
No way Andre could have lived long. I can't see him as a shrinking old man.

Andre was already an icon years before he died. Death didn't make him an icon, he just was one.
