I remember how excited I was when Rock returned in 2011. I was also excited to see a potential feud and match with Cena. Announcing it a year in advance at WM28 just killed the momentum and made me less interested. It should have happened at WM27 while the hype over Rock being back was still there and the excitement of him coming up against Cena. By the time they got in the ring together I didn't really care that much. They didn't strike while the iron was hot and dragged it out.

I disagree. Looking back at it, that year long build was something totally different and built to a incredible main event. The only bad thing was doing it again the next year. Should have been a three way with Punk vs Rock vs Cena.

I respectfully disagree. The audience did not purchase 27 for John Cena vs. Miz. They bought it for the prospect of The Rock and John Cena having a physical altercation. The next year, that same audience and more bought it for the promise of those two going one on one and had the highest or second highest (I forget) buy rate of any Wrestlemania. They sold two shows on one match, not to mention the rematch at 28. It was a smart business move.

It was better to build it up and make it mean something.

I liked the build. I also loved that they went for the 50/50 booking rather than an obvious face or heel. It made the match feel like a true marquee main event.

I bought the show for Cena/Miz among others. I nearly turned off because of Rock's interminable intro and skipped the main event the following 2 years. Keep in mind Cena is my second favourite guy ever. Rock's return almost killed my WWE fandom.

It helped to tank WM27 having it be a prologue to 28, but that long build helped 28. So it's a mixed bag either way IMO.

1. Building it for a year got them three huge buyrates with Rock instead of two.
2. The year long buildup, like it or not, was unique in modern WWE. They don't often try something that big and even less often stick to it.

I agree. I think WM 27 could've been great. It should've looked something like.
1. Edge vs Christian vs Alberto Del Rio vs Dolph Ziggler for the WHC
2. Corre vs Team WCW (Big Show, Rey Mysterio, Booker T, Kevin Nash)
3. Randy Orton vs CM Punk
4. Triple H vs Undertaker
5. Trish and Snooki vs LayCool
6. Daniel Bryan (representing Lawler) vs SHeamus (representing Cole). If Bryan wins, Lawler gets five minutes in the ring with Cole
7. WWE Champion Miz vs John Morrison in a ladder match.
8. Rock vs John Cena

Should have been a three way with Punk vs Rock vs Cena. I mean, yeah it was a year long. But there wasn’t much of anything to a build to it until around Mania time came around again. It was less of a long term build and more a case of them being transparent about their plans a year in advance.

So we're just not gonna take into account Rock needed the year to get back in ring shape?
