I already know Bret can carry a slug (Bulldog) to a great match. I don't think you may be gauging just how unbelievably awful MaGee was. Anyone questioning why this was such a feat of Bret's should watch this mercifully short Japanese match MaGee had: I'll give him one thing. He obviously cares about the safety of his opponent. lol

His opponent isn't doing much to help him, so his strikes look even weaker.

I think Magee could’ve benefited from working with Lanny Poffo for a year on the c-shows.
But an alternate universe exists with Magee dethroning Hogan at Wrestlemania IV

I wonder if this is the match that made Vince realize he may have been wrong about the guy www.youtube.com/watch?v=QqHt7ogN2GoBut then again. Dibiase pulled a good little something out of him.

Looking at what footage of him that has been posted in this thread and it's obvious he was very athletic. But at the same time his strikes were really weak looking and his movement in the ring in general was just really awkward. That said, if they just told him not to be afraid of just stiffing the crap out of his opponents then I don't think he would've been any worse then the Ultimate Warrior. Of course he's also not showing a fraction of the Warrior's charisma and intensity in anything he does.

Anyone questioning why this was such a feat of Bret's should watch this mercifully short Japanese match MaGee had: Shane McMahon's strikes look better than Magee's. And well, Bayley could probably hit a better Bayley to Belly on Big Show, than the Belly to Belly in this match. He's athletic, but weak strikes, no charisma, moves awkwardly, and has no explosiveness. How the hell did Vince think that this guy would be the next Hogan?

Being honest up until the recent excitement over it being found I had never even heard of this match. When Bret was putting together his Dungeon Collection DVD a few years ago he asked people on Twitter for match suggestions. Several people asked for the McGee match but Bret said there were no cameras there that night. That was the first time I heard of it. I would love to know how everybody else knew about this match. I'm assuming he wrote about it in his book?

I already know Bret can carry a slug (Bulldog) to a great match. That's pretty rude to say, imo.

I'm excited because this is the closest thing to a new Bret Hart match we'll probably ever get.

I seriously doubt that Vince was looking for a new Hogan in 1986. Hulk was only really two years into his run and was making Vince money hand over fist. I think that part is Bret talking some bullshit.

I think that part is Bret talking some bullshit. Vince still liked to explore his options for a backup. Keep in mind that one of his top face draws had been Snuka, and he'd have been well aware of Billy Graham's fall from grace. Vince knew that Hogan could fumble, too, he was just fortunate.

Yeah, but I mean what are the odds of Hulk Hogan ever dong something to generate a lot of bad press for himself and whatever wrestling company he's associated with? I mean, really...

Tom Magee reminds me of Nicole Bass. Not only I’m looks but the fact both had the perfect look for wrestling but sucked tremendously.

And there was what he did to Wendi Richter. If Vince could find the next Hogan, that gave him more power and more options.

It's ok to have expectations lowered - as said, this would probably blow our minds watching it in 1986, but Bret played a major part in making Magee look so good, that the performance sucked the owner of the company in as well. I can't wait to see it.
