So Family Matters started as a fairly typical sitcom about a family in Chicago that was pretty well grounded in reality.
Then Steve Urkel had a bit part and became a huge part of the show until he dominated the plot of almost every episode.
But then the show kept going on. Jaleel White grew up but still had to pretend to be a pre-pubecent nerd.
Have you guys seen the last two or three seasons of Family Matters? It gets really surreal with some of the plots and really weird. If you watch a Season 1 episode and then watch a Season 8 or Season 9 episode it's like two different shows.
So a Season 1 episode might be about Carl losing out on a promotion and having to try and remodel the bathroom and a Season 8 episode might be about their wacky neighbor using a transformation chamber to become Bruce Lee or a "cool" version of himself or maybe he'll build a robot version of himself.
That show really went off the rails...

Honestly, they more or less had to shift tide when it was apparent that Urkel was the only thing anyone really liked about that show. So if it didn't become The Steve Urkel Show, Family Matters would have lasted 1-2 seasons tops.

Urkel was playing backstage politics, that's how he got his push.

Goes from a Full House type of show to Urkel cloning himself, teleporting and going to space.

I like the story arc with the message that, if a girl doesn't like you for who you are, completely change yourself to get in her pants, despite having someone who worshiped the real you.

Urkel likes Laura but Laura doesn't like Urkel therefore something is wrong with Laura. It's a common trope in television where the girl is a bad person for not liking a guy.

Because a lot of writers were men and were putting their disdain for women on the small screen?

Myra was way hotter than Laura. Steve, you're an idiot!

Miller-Boyett and its predecessors were like that, weren't they? See also: Urkel's "cousin", Fonzie. Laverne and Shirley got pretty goofy too.

I thought Myra was way hotter than Laura. Plus she had a great personality and actually loved Urkel. He was a fool.
