I'm rather curious to know if there's some method to the madness or if it this is as hopelessly up its own ass as it seems, but not enough to actually play it. Honestly probably not enough so to watch a Let's Play.

I read a non-IGN one that said it was “the most technologically advanced walking simulator ever created.” The review itself said the gameplay loop sounds monotonous and bad, but somehow if you make it through the first ten hours of long and not great cutscenes you might find a way to enjoy it like he or she did. Not the most ringing endorsement.

Sounds like a spiritual successor to Deadly Premonition without the goofy charm, and given that's getting a sequel that basically renders this thing pointless.

IGN ethered the game, it was basically a walking simulator. I swear there has to be an element of Stockholm Syndrome to it, because all the positive reviews say the same thing. “This is very monotonous and exhausting, real work on the player’s behalf, and the story is front and backloaded(which funnily enough these are also the worst parts of the game), while the substantially long middle chunk of the game where you are doing the bulk of this grunt work with very little story progression is amazing!” It is the weirdest thing to see both the positive and negative reviews also describe the gameplay in the exact same way, which is that it is genuinely a tiring chore of a game, and yet some people somehow love it and call it a revolution of gaming while others just say, “Nah fam, this is bullshit.” I can’t help but wonder if some of the positive review people are just too reluctant to say Kojima made a bad game after all this time, because the positive reviews are deadass describing what sounds like a bad game, and yet they turn around and say they love it. I’m absolutely certain if this game came from a developer other than Kojima, it would be trashed to hell and back. Another kicker is that apparently for a review to go live, the reviewer absolutely without question must finish the game, which from the few reviews I’ve seen to list their playthrough length, is about 80 god damn hours minimum. That just sticks out in an odd way and almost feels like they are artificially tilting the resulting reviews in favor of those who are likely to actually like the game, because that is a long ass time to play a game everyone seems to agree can be exhausting from a gameplay standpoint. Like Edge is full on just not officially reviewing the game because of this clause, because the person tasked with reviewing the game was just too damn bored(and he did give it an honest try because he plowed ahead for 40 freaking hours!) to finish the game in time to review it before the printing deadline for the upcoming issue, and because of that, he just has no motivation left to keep more or less torturing himself with it just to get the review out.

Okay, wait, wait, the idea that you have to finish the game to review it is absolute bullshit. On what planet do you need to spend 80 hours before you're allowed to go, "So, that was awful."? Sounds like it's shit, they knew it was shit, so they set conditions that'd pretty much by necessity raise the amount of positive reviews.

I mean if a book is still dogshit bad on page 501, you don't need to read the final 200 pages to start telling people it sucks.

With regards to the reviews being so varying and mixed...
...So it's a Kojima game then.
For as beloved as the MGS series is by its fans, Kojima's output never got the most critical of praise universally speaking. Even by places that will sing his praises and call him a groundbreaking genius in other articles on their sites.
Which the reviews pretty much tell me that if you're a fan of Kojima, you'll likely enjoy it. If you're not, well, this isn't the game for you and it never was.

Some reviewer called Kojima’s finest hour...another one said the game was just an interactive music video. Let’s just admit the game sucks, Kojima isn’t perfect he can make mistakes just like the rest of us.

Oh my god this looks like trash lol
That IGN review showing how difficult it is to fast travel anywhere was hilarious. Imagine spending three years making a game about a post apocalyptic mailman. Imagine making keeping stacks of boxes balanced on them a critical gameplay feature

I think for the sake of Kojima’s freedom from Konami narrative people needed Death Stranding to be good.
The truth is, for as messed up as his exit from the company was, Kojima needs an overseer to reign him in. The problem is Kojima is the boss now and Sony is shockingly hands off with titles they publish, especially from third party studios. So there was no one around to tell Kojima, “no”.
It sounds like Kojima and his team spent too much time wondering whether or not they could do many of the game’s design choices instead of whether or not they should.
The end result is we now have a game that even a ride or die Kojima fanboy like myself is thinking, “Hey man, this sounds pretentious as hell.”

Konami definitely treated Kojima poorly towards the end, and I'm glad he has an outlet to do whatever he wants, but yeah, the reviews here aren't surprising at all. When you look at how MGS V turned out (and really, MGS after Solid 1), there has to be someone there to keep the weird shit in check.

But as a professional reviewer, in a book or film, you are supposed to at least say if the ending is worth it. Guess you can skip ahead to that in these mediums. With a video game, I thought review copies specifically allowed end game to be reached quickly. Like a game genie edition or something. In some older games that was the case I think

I find I love the idea of Kojima games much more than I do actually playing them. Since MGS3 I don't think I've ever gotten more than a half hour into one of them before shutting them off and never coming back. I didn't even bother with MGSV.
I doubt I'll bother with this, I haven't heard any compelling reason to.

This game is absolutely gorgeous. That’s about the only insight I have for tonight. Only about a half-hour in, but I’m ready for bed. Gonna play a bunch over my three day weekend.
I’m a total graphics nerd, so it’s a great first impression even though I don’t really know what the hells happening.

And now Norman is naked and crying and hugging a baby in front of a giant pile of dead fish and whales. This cutscene has confused the hell out of me.
