That sounds absolutely terrible. That said, the show did deserve an actual ending to it The ending was ALWAYS going to be Steve and Laura ending up together, there really was no way around that. But they could have avoided going full on sci fi with clones, time travel, genetic tampering, or introducing a plethora of useless characters that contributed nothing to the overall plot. And perhaps instead of Steve going into space it could have just been him getting a job with NASA or something.

While they were at it, they should have had time travel, in order to explain how Judy was erased from existence. She was already retconned out of the actual run of show. In one episode they mentioned there only being two Winslow children. Might as well tie up that loose end.
Maybe Myra went back in time to stop Laura from being born, but accidentally causes that to happen to Judy instead.

It was a wobbly wobbly paradox of the sitcom universe bringing itself back into balance, making up for Sondra not existing in the early episodes of The Cosby Show.

There is only one true ending to this show:
- Judy and Rachel return (Judy immediately disappears again. Cheap Pop) - Richie is revealed to be a young Lionel Richie brought from the past to the present by Steve's time travel experiments. (You know it's true) - The real Harriet comes back - Balki and Cousin Larry make a cameo as a shout out the show's origins. - Laura and Steve get married - JDF's appearance as a gang member and subsequent beatdown in a playground by Bruce Lee Urkel is cannonized as that actually being Tommy Oliver and the main reason why he moved to Angel Grove - Steve plans to visit a friend of his after his wedding who just so happens to be a martial artist (who inspired Bruce Lee Urkel) and lives in a van in the drive away of an 8 person family's house in Wisconsin. - Waldo actually becomes Where's Waldo? Waldo. - Carl and Harriet decide to leave the house to Laura and Steve as a wedding gift and move out to Los Angles. - Eddie remains Eddie and continues to live with Laura and Steve (Here's your Spin-Off show/reboot). - Carl jokes that once he is out of Steve's sight he is changing his name. - R.I.P. Michelle Thomas
Final Scene of the episode:
It's months later.
Los Angles.
Winter even.
Carl stops a convince store while on patrol. He buys whole bunch of twinkies and blames it on Harriet.
As he is about to leave his radio goes off:
Dispatch: "Dispatch to Abe Lincoln 30. Over."
Carl reaches for his radio
Carl: "This is Abe Lincoln 30 come on in. Over.
Dispatch: "Investigate a Code 2 at Nakatomi Plaza, Century City."
Carl: "This is Abe Lincoln 30 to dispatch. (dramatic pause) I'm on my way."
- Fade Out -
GREATEST ENDING TO A SITCOM OF ALL TIME.
FIGHT ME.
(Don't fight me.)

I don't even remember why, but I'm pretty sure my dad and I missed the conclusion to Lost in Space and I thought for years that Family Matters ended with Urkel careening around in space. It was only a few years ago that I learned there was a part two to that episode. o.O

How did this show lose it’s f***ing mind anyway? How do you go from stories of a working class black family to cloning, killer robots and Urkel clinging to the space shuttle?

Yeah, I mean I don't mind a little silliness in a sitcom but Family Matters went way, way overboard with the wackiness in those last couple seasons. I much prefer the first 3 or 4 seasons to the last ones.

How did this show lose it’s f***ing mind anyway? How do you go from stories of a working class black family to cloning, killer robots and Urkel clinging to the space shuttle? The best writers and some key cast members left for varying reasons. The show ran longer than it should have and the remaining writers were creatively exhausted. And Urkel’s role had grown out of proportion, changing the formula.

Since Urkel is the nexus point of Family Matters, Step by Step and Full House, the finally should be him sacrificing himself so that all three realities could continue to exist. It is later implied that sometime down the line that the mantel of Urkel will be passed down to a new successor to guard the TV realms.

Had a chance to do a more thorough review of the synopsis for the unproduced episodes, and wanted to share with you all an even more thorough look at just how crazy that season would have gone. Buckle your seat belts, its gonna be a bumpy ride! To start with, the season premier would actually have been a two hour long movie revolving around Steve and Laura's wedding, or rather their numerous attempts at a ceremony. For you see, Myra (portrayed by a new actress as Michelle Thomas had already succumbed to stomach cancer) would be on the warpath against Steve and Laura after serving a brief jail sentence for stalking Steve. She would repeatedly sabotage their ceremonies until Stefan swoops into talk her out of her rage and convince her to move on with her life. The movie episode would have ended with the cast paying tribute to the passing of Michelle Thomas. The bulk of the season would revolve around Steve and Laura going through the struggles of a pair of newlyweds, such as trying to find work that can support a family, looking for a house so they can move out of Carl and Harriet's, and having their first problems in the bedroom. But there would have been several episodes revolving around the rest of the cast, as well as some minor subplots. These would include: The first and only appearance of Steve's father, Doctor Urkel, who would appear in an episode to reconcile with his son and apologize for what a neglectful parent he had been. A final Halloween episode with yet another appearance by Stevil, the possessed Urkel dummy. But this time aided by an evil Laura puppet-before the reformed Carl puppet from the prior Halloween episode would foil his plans to steal Steve's soul. The return of Waldo, who's absence would be explained as having been away studying at culinary school and that his letters to Maxine had been delivered to the wrong address. Inspired by Steve and Laura, Waldo would propose to Maxine-and then Eddie would join in by proposing to his longtime girlfriend Greta. There would have been an episode in which all four get married by a judge-but the paperwork gets screwed up and Eddie ends up married to Maxine, while Waldo ends up married to Greta. But with all being sorted out by the end, of course. Most significant of all would be the subplot of Steve's cousin OGD (Original Gangsta Dawg), who had appeared in all of a single episode of the ninth and final season. Changing his gangsta ways, he would accompany Carl Winslow on a series of police ride alongs to aid troubled youths. But Carl would not trust OGD, seeing him as a thug. This would change when Carl starts receiving threatening letters. OGD and Eddie (who had become a cop himself in the ninth season) would team up to investigate, finding out the letters were from a criminal Carl had arrested years before and had since been released and was plotting his revenge. This would cause Carl to trust OGD and welcome him into the Winslow fold-which would, in turn, open the way to OGD and Myra dating, allowing her to move on from Steve and find new love. But as dark as that sounds, it pales in comparison to what I described in the OP. In a two part episode, Stefan would attempt to get to know his Urkel relatives, including a final appearance by Myrtle-but the good times would be interrupted by him falling gravely ill. Steve would try to find out what is afflicting his alter ego, and would conclude the cloning process he had used to create this separate Stefan had been only temporary and that Stefan will ultimately die. The second episode would be a clip episode as Steve and Laura sit with Stefan to comfort him in his final hours, looking back at all the good times they have had throughout the show's run. This would give Stefan the closure to meet his fate peacefully, and then... Yeah. But as described, Stefan's "Cool" essence would pass into Steve, effectively making him a hybrid of Steve and Stefan that looks like Steve but has Stefan's voice. To cap it all off, the finale episode would have been busy as hell. First, Eddie would lose his police job due to budget cuts, forcing him to take an offer in New York City. Waldo would be offered his own cooking show in California, so he and Maxine are relocating too. Aunt Rachel would put in a final appearance to reclaim Little Richie, as she had been away seeking work and had finally landed a job in another state and wants her son to live with her. 3J, the orphan the Winslows took in during a previous season (and who is never remembered by anyone who watched this show) would reunited with his mom. And Steve and Laura would witness the birth of their first child, a daughter, capping the show off with one final family gathering before everyone parts to go their separate ways. During the obligatory bows during the credits, Jamiee Foxworth would also make a final appearance, answering the long troubling question of what the hell happened to Judy-and yes, she would have come down the stairs to join the rest of the cast in taking their final bow. But hey, lets not overlook the true happy ending of it all: Carl and Harriet would finally get their frigging house to themselves!

Okay, what about Carl and Harriette? What happens with them? It's a sitcom. We never see them again. Guess.
