I'm looking for some help here.
I've been all over the net, looking up ways to gain weight, in a healthy way... but I figured why not ask my fellow 'crappers to get more of a "hands on experience" answer, instead of relying on what I've read on web sites.
K, here we go.
I am 5'11, 160 lbs... very skinny features. I don't like it. I work out, but I end up just being lean. Now, I want to put on some weight so I don't look so skinny, but everything I try doesn't work.
I can basically eat anything and not gain a pound. My girl HATES that fact. I digress... I am looking to put some weight on, and be muscular, and lose the thinness.
Can anyone help me...? I have a heatlhy diet rich in fruits, vegatables, and carbs... and low in saturated fats. I work out 3 times a week on weight machines, and try to do cardio, but don't usually have time for it.
Any suggestions, or better yet, real life experiences would be very appreciated.

The nights before you do cardio eat a pasta dinner. The extra carbs can help out with weight gain. If you don't like pasta then have some health-oriented pizza, like an all-veg one or a seafood pizza.

I am almost exactly the same size as you, and I've been doing the exact same things. I've been trying to eat a lot more, and my arms have gotten bigger and a bit more muscular, but I've also been getting a bit of a tummy.
I think, like you, I'm not doing enough cardio. However, doing cardio, good for you as it may be, will definitely not help put on weight. I bought some protein shake mix, but I stopped drinking it because it gives me really bad gas.
I'm sorry I can't be of more help, I could really use some pointers myself.

Cut out the cardio and just lift. That'll increase muscle mass.
Then just pack away the carbs like nobody's business.

i wouldnt cut out cardio if your an athlete of any kind. If you just want weight gain, then its cool.
I gained 50 lbs over a year and a half, so ill let u know what i did, but it might not work for everyone:
-high calorie diet, i did 3,500 to 4,000 a day, in 5 or 6 meals -protien, extreme protien diet, you need tons of it. Drink a protien shake within 30 mins of a workout. I recommend Xyience Protien, cuz it tastes the best. -Vitamins, get some mens vitamins from GNC. They keep your body from loosing too much during work outs, keep you energized. -Worry a little less about fat content and more about sugar content. Fat is necessary, and is in any type of meat. Sugar is just crap. -Water. Drink lots. Or low calorie drinks. limit the calories from beverages and leave the bulk of your diet to actual foods with vitamins and protien.
Also, what is ur lift schedule? What are you doing each day you are in the gym?

It's probably just your body type, some people just can't gain large amounts weight and will always have a skinny frame no matter what they try. A lot of people would consider you lucky to be built like that and can eat whatever you want and not gain a pound.

Yeah, the protein and calorie suggestions are mostly spot-on, I'd say.
I actually find that certain kinds of cardio are worthwhile, though. Mainly running: running doesn't always burn as many calories as other cardio activities, but it does build some muscle.
Granted, it's mostly lean muscle, but I figure it doesn't hurt, either. Maybe a half hour of running each day, to go with the lifting regiment?

I was 6 foot 140 in my teens. The quickest way to drop the beanpole look was to eat double lunches and have second or third helpings on the grilled cheese sandwiches, but it wasn't until I was in my 20's that I finally cracked 200.

I dont know about you, but the guys at the GNC's ive been too (all over NYC) have no clue what theyre talkin about. One guy told me in the early days to drink protien as i work out. Anybody with a brain knows thats stupid. Why would you down a meal (high protien, many use it as a meal replacement) while ur working out? Do you WANT to puke? Also, DONT get a weight gainer, its all sugar, and thats the reason u gain weight.

Sounds like you're an ectomorph. You have the incredibly high metabolism that'll keep you from becoming bulky.
Unfortunately, you could be doing everything right to gain weight: lots and lots of carbs and lots and lots of basic heavy lifting. But you won't gain mass, you won't be bulky, like you want to be.
Cena is a good example of an ectomorph. He'll never have that barrel chest and wide shoulders etc. etc. He's incredibly strong, deceptively so because of his smaller size, but his metabolism will keep him from becoming a Brock Lesnar-type huge.
Of course, weight training can help you gain muscle, and you'll get bigger by gaining muscle, but you'll resemble a Cena more than a Lesnar. What exactly do you do in the gym, anyway? Do you do a lot of heavy basic movements, or just a bunch of machines?

www.sparkpeople.com is a good site to go to, I'd reccomend signing up there, it's a good way to track down what you eat on a daily basis, protein, calories, carbs, vitamins, you just record what you eat and it does the math for you. I was in the EXACT same boat as you, but I just picked up the habit of eating every two hours, just little things, I'd have instant breakfast, two hours later cereal and juice, two hours later I'd have like, a burrito and salad, two hours later maybe a pizza pop, I'm not as particular as most diets which probably isn't a good thing, I don't eat for specific amounts of protein or anything, I just eat, and work out for an hour at least 3 days a week, always have a water bottle on me(each day I'd drink about 8 glasses worth), and I gained 20 pounds in 4 months that way. Lately I haven't been too great at eating as much as I'd want to and working out as much as I'd like to, I gained the most weight when I was unemployed, I'm still 180 and kind of moving up and down from there.

Yea I guess I forgot to mention not to ask the people who work there... some of them know their stuff but some are just working there. And they have this stuff in a red container that does help, I believe it says "Muscle Mass" in huge letter on the front. It helped my buddy at least.

But the problem with those programs is that each individual is different. The program is good in a vague sense, but it's far from an exact science.

Lifting and cardio in the same workout can cause the body to produce cortisol which will stimulate muscle catabolism and hinder any progress in bulking up.

I'm working hard on gaining weight for wrestling school, I think I used to be about the same size when I started, 180 now. If you wanna get bigger you have to eat like crazy. I take whey protein shake when I wake up, a weight gainer shake 30 mins before my workout, a whey protein shake again right after my work out & then an hour after that another weight gainer shake. Also I always have 2 chicken breasts a day & then just anything else I can eat really.

if you have a hyperactive metabolism, here's a way to try to slow it down some.
step 1. skip breakfast
step 2. eat a huge lunch
step 3. take a nap immediately after lunch
step 4. do any work outs after noon. never in the morning
