The UHF thread reminds me... we've had lots of occasions to say this, but 1989 is a banner year for pop culture and cult favorites. Among others, there's...
- Batman - Ghostbusters II - UHF - No Holds Barred (yeah, cult classic may be stretching it...) - Look Who's Talking - Popular franchises adding an installment (Nightmare on Elm Street, Friday the 13th, Halloween, Star Trek...). Hey I never said a GOOD installment.
Over on TV, Chip 'n' Dale Rescue Rangers began. Wrestlingwise, the Megapowers exploded. WCW had one of its peak periods with the Flair/Steamboat trilogy, then Flair vs. Funk. USWA replaced World Class.
The 16-bit invasion began with the Genesis and TurboGrafx. NES was still producing classics.

I was 14 in 1989. Arcade games were going from strength, their home computer conversions even more so, dance music was becoming more mainstream, the films mentioned above were packing out cinemas, wrestling was found great business...
It was a good time to be a teen.

Cathedral, Crowbar, Immortal, Incantation, Marilyn Manson, and Sigh all formed in 1989.
Among the great metal albums of the year were Streetcleaner by Godflesh, Horrified by Repulsion, Agent Orange by Sodom, Beneath The Remains by Sepultura, and my personal favorite album from that year, Altars Of Madness by Morbid Angel. In fact, 1989 was a good year for metal albums in general.

It's not always a thing, but more than one person have pointed out that the last few years of every decade usually pump out some insane level of content (like the stretch of 97 to 99 is kind of incredible if you look at all the games that came out in that time that we consider the apex. Even each individual year of those three have a legit argument for the best year the video game industry ever saw in terms of quality content output).
