Their plots are simplistic and too cutesy. This tone did not especially appeal to people of the late 80s and 90s who were not really much into RPGs in the first place. As such, the series never really gained a strong foothold. I've always adored the series, ever since I got Dragon Warrior with my Nintendo Power subscription when I was really young. I ended up with two copies of the NES DW1. Bought it a month or so after it came out. Then my aunt got me a subscription to Nintendo Power which came with DW1. Knew piles of people with DW1,but most of them played it for an hour didn't like it and that was it. Always preferred Dragon Warrior to Final Fantasy. As others have said FFVII was huge over here. None of the modern Dragon Warriors have come close to being that big.

If I was going to try break a non-fan into the series I’d start them with XI. I barely had to grind. In fact, the only times I remember doing it was the few times I was just killing time. And I beat it relatively easily.
Sure beats the times in VII or VIII when I spent hours grinding before every dungeon.
Grinding for levels really does suck.

I dunno, but I'm still sad and disappointed (but not necessarily surprised) that they won't release DQ1-3 on the 3DS store in the West. I've beaten both 1 (on the NES) and 3 (the GBC remake), but I never got a chance to play 2.
Also, I should probably finish VIII at some point.
