I've never heard "Rest in Power" before and I'm sorry but it sounds just incredibly tryhardy regardless of context. It really comes across as something that would only be uttered by the sort of insecure people who are terrified of not coming across as hard at all times. It feels like something a caricatural character would be made to say as a joke in a movie or something especially because, well, it makes no sense. "Rest in Peace" makes perfect sense because the person no longer has to struggle and you hope they're in a better place where they can find peace and quiet they couldn't find during their lifetime. But what the Hell does "Rest in Power" even mean? Are they supposed to grit their teeth while reclining on a cloud in Paradise? Why WOULD they even need power in the afterlife? Isn't that the exact opposite of resting? I get the sentiment but it sounds so foolish and shallow. It seems especially weird to me if people are doing it for activists of victims of oppression considering it really makes it sound like they're saying that these people deserve a special afterlife for being so far above the rest of the plebs, which I'm pretty sure would go against their beliefs. People seriously need to stop trying to constantly come up with these nonsense variations on phrases to make it sound like it's so much more important when they're the ones doing it, but only end sup proving that they don't really have anything meaningful to say on the subject, so they try to compensate with catchy buzzwords. You don't need to turn everything into a spectacle, FFS. It’s a shame that I can only like this post once. Don't worry, I liked it for you too.

I most often hear Rest in Power used in the rock/metal music communities. Which I guess makes a certain type of sense, although I don't know the origins of the expression.

I don’t even know how this thread has managed to stay open. I know I’ve seen moderators before speak on how everyone is allowed to cope with death here in their own way. That’s understandable. And this thread happens, and moderate discussion happens, and it stays open open so I’m assuming it’s okay to discuss said form of expression when it comes to death. Both pro and con.. But what I don’t understand is comments like “This thread got very white very fast” being allowed and not even being referenced for 24 hours. So that’s okay? Because it’s literally happened before to me on this board where people lumped me in as “being white”. And I’m not. And if this is a skin color thing and not a race thing and “this thread got very Hispanic very quick” or “this thread got very black very quick” isn’t comparable, then is “this thread got very brown” or “this thread got very white” okay on this board? I’m clarifying because I’m genuinely confused.

This thread got very white very fast. Hey, feel free to imagine me throwing whatever brutal insult at you you would feel most insulted by in response to this because I'm not going to give you the effort of coming up with one. It's becoming incredibly frustrating how comfortable the internet is with lumping whatever opinions they don't like into "white" and how we're just supposed to pretend like it's okay instead of insulting the person and ostracizing the person like real people do in the real world.

My understanding of it has always been that it's saying a persons death will increase their power, their influence, the positive effect on lives around them. I've always read it as telling people that person hasn't gone away - that it crystallizes what's important about them and makes their influence stronger to others. Especially in the social justice contexts you see it used most often in

Well I guess I'll chime in on the actual topic here.
I don't really see the big deal in people saying the "power" variation. It just sounds like another way of paying respect to someone you find to be inspirational or influential.
If that's what they wanna say then why stop them?
