I’ll counter. He didn’t sweep Netflix aside because he didn’t like them, he did it because Marvel Television is still under the control of Ike Pearlmutter. Pearlmutter was ready to fire the entire Avengers cast as expendable due to their costs after Age of Ultron. It’s also known Ike doesn’t think much of female characters - why the Black Widow movie didn’t achieve liftoff until now. Plus Civil War would have been very different had he stuck around. It drove Feige to basically say it’s Ike or me. Marvel separates Marvel Studios from Marvel Television and we get the MCU from Civil War forward. It’s only because of the friction between Ike and Feige. It’s not being cocky, it’s Ike is an asshole. And I blame Sony in as much than negotiation beyond their 95/5 counter, Sony broke talks, took Spidey and went home, effectively cutting out the MCU completely at this point. That’s arrogant at an appalling level given Venom may have been dumb luck thanks to the Chinese market. But I will concede they got Into the Spider-Verse right so... plus one, Sony? There will be two more Tom Holland Spider-Man movies currently in the works, but MCU is out. So God only knows. Oh, I know all about the drama with Perlmutter. I can’t stand that prick. I have other reasons to dislike, but due to political rules, I will not utter here. But I can’t blame Feige for disavowing Netflix - he had no choice due to the separation. Otherwise, we might have seen those characters in the MCU movies - they all had movie appearances included if offered. It just didn’t work out. I’ll freely admit I will be a bit of a defender of Feige because of all he did with the MCU as the pro and it’s easy to see defined villains like Ike and in this case Sony as bad. But now, what happens? The MCU will go on, of course, but without Spider-Man. And that really really sucks since we finally got the character to a good place in character and theme.

But that’s you start a negotiation - you make a high offer, knowing you will get a low counter and you go from there. Sony pulled the rug out by going low, then after the no, they went home. Not much of a negotiation really. No, because basically, the starting offer was shit. Like, I'm not experienced in negotiation at all but if you were coming up to me and saying "Hey, I originally asked you for 5% of something and now I want 50% of it", sure, I can get it climbed down but if you've already shown your intentions from that, why would I bother? That's a massive jump. They also just produced the highest grossing movie of all time. If there's anything in the industry that's gonna give you the power to ask for that kind of jump, it's that.

That's a massive jump. I’m no master negotiator, but I would remind the highball offerer that I own the rights to the character and can break off if I so choose. Now let’s get real. That’s enough of a return nose tweak. Sony was letting Disney/Marvel do all the creative while they benefited on the order of 95%. Sony could come down, even to 60/40, but doesn’t sound like they were negotiating in good faith anyway. They were looking to walk at first chance is my impression and they did.

And if they went in there with that mindset, it's probably why it backfired on them in the first place. It doesn't entitle them to try and grab that much from someone who owns the licence when they can easily just have them not use the licence anymore, regardless of the circumstance.

Well, I'm positive this will bite them on the ass and they'll come back, though I found Homecoming pretty intolerable anyway and this version of Peter actively annoying so I don't really actually mind.

We’re giving Sony credit for making an okay Venom movie and for, I dunno, being aware that their animation team was making a Spider-Man movie?
Does anyone honestly think that the assholes who pushed Spider-Man 3 and Amazing Spider-Man 2 out into the cinema toilet bowl gave a f*** about the Spider-Man animated movie?

And a late breaking development reported by Fandango:
In the words of Endgame “Don’t... give me hope.”

That's a massive jump. It’s not quite that cut and dry tho. That 5% Disney currently had comes with 0 risk to Disney, as they weren’t financing. In asking for 50%, they’ve also offered to assume 50% of the risk in paying for the movie to get made. It’s not like they rolled up and demanded 50% and offered nothing else in exchange. It was a reasonable number to throw out, given the offer to co-finance. For Sony to not even counter makes me believe they had no intention of moving forward with the deal.

This is what io9 said about it. Now that is interesting. I don't want to jump the gun or be that guy, but what if he had a role in the Spiderverse being rolled out as it was? He is a huge fan of the Miles Morales character. If so, that would certainly remove a feather from Sony's cap. Could be other Spider-Man related content admittedly (like maybe he had a hand in the plot of the PS4 game?). But it's not like there is that much of it out there by Sony that would require a proper credit for him.

Maybe Sony saw the instant reactions and said, "not so fast....."? LOL That’s the theory. Disney intentionally leaked the offers and Sony walking away so Sony feels the heat. And if you have ever spent time on the Internet, Sony must feel like they are on top of a very angry erupting volcano at the moment.
