Yeah, Radiohead never play Creep for that reason. Also, the rest of their discography is so vastly different from that song it would stick out badly in the setlist. Creep sounds so different to everything else they did, it ends up sounding like a Hollies song Which version of The Hollies, the band from the 60’s or the one confused with CCR?

They’re the same band right? IIRC, the people who wrote The Air That I Breathe (which was a huge hit for The Hollies in the mid-70s) took legal action as Creep sounded similar. They now have a co-writers credit on Creep. I don’t think either of the guys who wrote the song were actually in The Hollies but I could be wrong there as the band has been around since the 60s (and are still going today) and have had many different members.

Until you've seen them more than once and realize it's the exact same jokes every single night for the last 10 years. Off topic as hell, but I almost got in a fight with their singer once. I love the band, but that dude is a dick. Oddly enough my Fiance also hates that dude/has a minor personal connection to him That made it awkward when I was SO into their performance at Warped tour. Relating to this topic: they played Sell Out at that show, but no "She Has a Girlfriend Now"

I remember that Billy Joel refused to sing Uptown Girl for a while because it was a song about his wife that he had a divorce from some time after it becoming one of his key hits. Piano Man is also another one he went cold on, I think I heard that he plays it, but just lets the crowd sing at some concerts.

Saw him last Summer, he happily played Piano Man near the end of the set.

Bands can play whatever the f*** they want. Yeah, it might be disappointing if you don’t get to hear one of your favorites but they’re not required to play “just the hits” or go for a nostalgia pop.
For example, I saw Iron Maiden during their “A Matter of Life and Death” tour. They played the entire album from beginning to end, then played three favorites to close it out (2 Minutes to Midnight, Hallowed Be Thy Name, then closed with Fear of the Dark). While I would have liked to hear The Trooper (amongst other songs) live, I enjoyed the concert immensely. You go to see the band play, not have them cater to your every whim.

Weird Al recently did a tour of nothing but deep cuts and b-sides. And it was incredible. Yep, went to the Dallas show of it. No parodies (besides one as the final encore), none of his hits. Great show. Went to a Blue October show recently too, they only played two of their bigger songs and the rest was new stuff or album tracks. Still a great show, even if my 3-4 favorite songs of theirs weren't played (and their opener Longwave didn't play the only song of theirs I even know).

Years ago saw Rancid at a big package tour. Crowd was screaming for Timebomb. And the band did the worst version of the song they could. Then did 3 or 4 songs most of the crowd didn't know.
I rather see a band do songs they want to do than doing a song they got tired of playing 10 years or longer ago.

What about bands debuting new songs in concert (ie, ones that havent been commercially released yet)?

I’ve seen Maiden 3 times and still haven’t got Hallowed be thy name on the setlist. It’s my favorite song, but every time I’ve seen them it’s been amazing.

What about bands debuting new songs in concert (ie, ones that havent been commercially released yet)? I understand why they do it when a new album cycle is gearing up and they’ve probably been playing essentially the same set for the last year or more, but I’ve always hated it. The audience doesn’t know what they’re in for so they don’t know how to react, and it’s really an awkward experience all around.

Depends on the singer/band and what you're advertising the tour as, really.
I am not unsympathetic to a musician getting burned out on material, but you should still respect what built your house, and recognize that not every person at your concert is a die hard who has been to dozens of your shows. A healthy mix is usually the ideal.

Europe would open AND close the show with "The Final Countdown" Why are you talking like only Europe does this? There are other bands that open and close with the Final Countdown?

What about bands debuting new songs in concert (ie, ones that havent been commercially released yet)? I dunno. It can be fun. I know Guns started playing Use Your Illusion stuff before it came out. Axl explained there was a delay in the album and he could fight about it with lawyers or go on tour, then said they’d be playing stuff from the album so f*** it. He also called the audience “downloading motherf***ers” when they sang along with Chinese Democracy stuff that wasn’t released yet. So...there.

if you are at a Bob Dylan show expecting to hear his hits then bad news, not gonna happen most likely. If you are a huge Dylan freak and would kill to hear him play a bunch of deep cuts then you will have a fantastic time!
I dig the Brian Wilson Pet Sounds tours caus you get alot of really good album cut songs in the setlist versus his Brian Wilson: Hits Live which is what it presents itself as, him doing the beach boys hits and then love and mercy to close.

Eh, an artist can play what they want. The only issue I have is when bands don't play music from before a certain point anymore.
For example, Amon Amarth doesn't play anything released before Versus the World. The vocalist made a good point as to why, that a lot of the newer audience wouldn't react to their older material. I get that, but it would be nice if they threw in a couple bones now and then for some of their older fans..

A set list is completely at the discretion of the artist. They call the shots.
That said, it’s completely understandable that a person can be upset when the band you paid to see didn’t play one of its biggest hits.
But again, they’re not obligated to play anything.
