So what are some gimmicks that you believe got ruined essentially as soon as it got started or not too long after Samuel Shaw went from a guy with an interesting Dexter/Patrick Bateman type gimmick in which he was cold and calculated and lived in a luxury apartment to being a wacko who lives with his mom in his bunk bed room

Waylon Mercy got off to a great start before Dan Spivey's health problems interfered.

Bray Wyatt, when he became a deus ex machina and lost his first big match needlessly to Cena.
It continued to go downhill from there until they eventually had to repackage him this year.

The obvious one: Took literally less than 2 seconds. It was a Michael Tarver-type knockout.

Well The Shockmaster feel through a wall and had people laughing. Went from what supposed to be a serious threat to a clumsy goof at a drop of a hat.
The Kiss Demon. The fact the person playing switched after a debut, and was never used outside of Saturday night for months before having that "Main Event" match for PPV.

Berlyn. I commend WCW for steering away from that archetype after Columbine, but nevertheless that shelved the gimmick almost immediately.

Berlyn. I commend WCW for steering away from that archetype after Columbine, but nevertheless that shelved the gimmick almost immediately. Berlyn was ruined by getting sandbagged by Jim Duggan in his PPV debut, nothing to do with Columbine. Wright appeared on Nitro right before Columbine in his Berlyn get-up, where he was acknowledged as Alex Wright. That's when the gimmick got shelved--he was brought back as Berlyn about 5 months later and treated as a newcomer.

Whoever made the call to have Berlyn debut against Duggan was weapons-grade levels of idiotic. Like, did they have no idea who Duggan was, or how little he gave a shit about getting over anyone who wasn't Jim Duggan, historically speaking? Of course he'd sandbag.

He was supposed to debut against Buff Bagwell. Whether or not that's better or worse then Duggan is up for debate. But Bagwell showed up to the arena and refused to job to Alex Wright. So they quickly rewrote the story and threw Duggan out there to sub for him.

At least put him out there with someone who he could put out a decent match with so people want to seem him again. Put him in with Lash Leroux, Kidman, one of the face luchadors etc.

Even making Bagwell his first target was probably not the right move if you actually wanted to create a top-level star, but of course anyone high on the card wasn't going to put Berlyn over anyway. I'm in the minority on this because I really liked Berlyn, the presentation, the interpreter, the Secret Service stuff, Alex's performance in the gimmick, and think it deserved more. I question the idea that Duggan never sold for anybody. Granted, it was always big monsters and not bulked-up cruisers like Alex Wright, but he played a huge role in making Yokozuna a top guy, and One Man Gang a top guy in Mid-South. If there was one thing Duggan always knew how to do well, even past his prime, it was sell a beating.

It was WCW, he was always going to be a midcard act, at least let him be one who wins and has entertaining matches. I loved the character too, but it'd take a LOT for him to get beyond US title level.
