Of course, we all know about the cartoons based off of Garfield and Peanuts, Dilbert has a cult following, and Boondocks may be coming back, but what are some lesser known cartoons based off of comic strips? For example, there was a cartoon based off of Mother Goose and Grimm (with many eps written by Mark Evanier!) that lasted for two seasons, but now it's barely even talked about:

The New Zealand comic strip “Footrot Flats” had an an animated movie released in the 80’s. And it’s quite good from what I remember.. featuring the voice acting of the late great John Clarke Clips of it are featured in the music video for the New Zealand National Anthem www.imdb.com/title/tt0131400/

Did you guys know that that weird Popeye comic strip got a couple of cartoons made for it?
Ok, ok, I kid, I kid.
So I did some research on this, came across a lot of obvious ones (Dick Tracy, Dennis the Menace, Heathcliff, Flash Gordon, etc.), also came across a lot of one-offs and specials, as well as a lot of early 20th century theatrical shorts. But as for television shows, the one that stuck out at me was the 1960's King Features Trilogy of Beetle Baily, Krazy Kat and Snuffy Smith. Fifty episodes were made, with each character getting one six minute short per episode. I like to consider myself fairly knowledgeable on cartoon history, but I had never heard of this before now -

I vaguely remember there being a "Baby Blues" cartoon, whose theme song was, bizarrely enough, "It's All Been Done" by the Barenaked Ladies.

I genuinely loved the Dennis the Menace cartoon from the 80's. Theme song was stupid catchy.

Robot Man, the '80s strip designed specifically to be a merchandise-mover, had...this: What's odder is that it morphed into a weird sci-fi comedy strip called Robotman and Monty, and when they lost the license the strip became simply "Monty".

Then years got a DVD set that had lots of those cartoons on it. Love the SNuffy SMith cartoon. Beetle Bailey is decent. Never could get into Krazy Kat. Love the comic strip but the cartoon is missing something.

Before they closed all their stores I kept seeing the DVD of that special at Fred's Dollar Store for $3. Grabbed it and watched it for the first time in at least 20 years.

There is a Hagar the Horrible special that is really fun. THe set I mentioned in a previous post had it. I had never seen it before then.
Do many people remember the Blondie animated specials?

I remember there was a Ziggy Christmas special that, despite him talking in the comics, he didn't talk the entire special.

I remember there was a Ziggy Christmas special that, despite him talking in the comics, he didn't talk the entire special. One of the first "Collectors" dvds I bought at a con was a collection of Xmas cartoons including the Ziggy special. Only saw it once years ago I think the first year it aired. Never saw it rerun. And the version on the DVD was obviously from a tv airing.

I genuinely loved the Dennis the Menace cartoon from the 80's. Theme song was stupid catchy. There was another Dennis The Menace cartoon from 1993 that ran for 1 season on CBS Saturday mornings: www.imdb.com/title/tt0287192/Most likely put out to build the hype for the live action Dennis film that came out around the same time.

Love the comic strip but the cartoon is missing something. The KK cartoon was toned down and simplified from the original strip. For instance, the ambiguiety of KK was taken away and it was clearly stated that KK was female. That Snuffy Smith cartoon's theme song was on one of the megamixes of closing logos I used to keep on VHS. Totally obsession forming.
