Recently, I watched a video about MTV Cribs on YouTube and how a lot of what was shown on that program was faked. Sure, SOME could have been legitimate, but others were obviously rentals. For example, when the Ying Yang Twins were featured, it was said that they didn't even check out the house before having the episode shot there. I mean I started laughing when I saw some clips about how the house was chock full of boat models and sailboat paintings. Then there was an episode about Ja Rule renting someone's home, but was then sued because the homeowner didn't authorize to have an episode shot there, not to mention a huge party was thrown there and there were condoms and syringes found in some of the rooms.
Then you had some legit ones. One of the most memorable ones had to do with Redman, who showed where he really lived, which was just a regular pad that was messy. A lot of people respected him for doing that. I even saw an interview where he talked about how MTV wanted him to rent a house for his episode.
Being that I was young when it was one, I wasn't sure where I stood. I thought that some houses were cool but they were too big for someone, even for some people who were members of groups. For example, I am certain that none of us believed that members of music groups actually lived together.
What did you think?

I took it at face value at the time, but I didn't really watch religiously, so I am not sure how many episodes I saw had BS ones. All I really remember was Ice-T having a vending machine because he was cheap and didn't want to give his friends candy.

the only specific thing i remember from Cribs that bugged me is someone (pretty sure it was Ice T) was showing the house and they went into the bedroom and he was slightly embarrassed because there was a camera on a tripod in front of the bed. like that morning he woke up in the bed, he knew the crew was coming to film, and at no point decided to get rid of the sextape camera before they walked in and "accidentally" saw it? also, while some of them are fake, this one is completely legit: www.youtube.com/watch?v=M0i1_swaX7s&feature=youtu.be&t=36

I think they did Penn Jillette’s house. That was legit. He lived there until he tore it down a few years ago.

I figured some were rentals, but I thought they just decided to show off one of their other places so people don't see where they really live. It's not like any of those people couldn't afford a crazy big house.
But I agree with Daniel Tosh, the show should have been called, "Hey, Wanna Feel Like A Failure?"
And I think Stifler had a pretty low key house too. Even had a broken window or something.

I still love the episode of Cribs that featured the Jackass guys, if only because Chris Pontius shit all over the show’s entire concept by saying he lived out of his truck.

That Rob Zombie one was really his house. I remember that one. It didn't feel like he lived in a mansion. It was a decent size, but not luxurious. Plus, I believed him about the pool being the ignored part of the house.

I never suspected it was fake. Renting and furnishing fancy homes so famous people can pretend they live there for an MTV show sounds like WAY more of a pain in the ass than just visiting their actual houses.

Honestly this is the first I've even heard it was fake but that's probably because I never watched it nor really ever paid any mind to it.

I remember Paul Walker's episode. It had to be legitimate. It was an old trailer parked near a beach and he just talked about surfing, lol.

I was pretty young in the Cribs heyday so I totally got worked by it (and didn't think about it again until this thread), but I came in to post that the Jackass episode is super entertaining, and to specifically highlight how funny Pontius' bit was.

I never thought about Cribs enough to think of it either way.

For some reason, the first thing I think of when someone mentions Cribs is how Tommy Lee had his own Starbucks machine.

Dale Earnhardt Jr. does legitimately have both a fully functional wild west town on his property and a "race car graveyard".
