I saw the show, and I was underwhelmed. It wasn't bad by any means, but if you are going head to head with an AEW ppv you need to bring a better game than that. El Phantasmo vs Sho was really the only standout match to me, and unfortunately I had accidentally seen a spoiler for ELP retaining, so some of the fun of watching it was lost. I don't think it was completely trying to compete with Full Gear, okay maybe a little, but there is a gap in between regular tours in Japan. It was on the other side of the country and not a big enough show to bring in new subscribers. I felt it was more of a showcase to let US fans get a glimpse of what kind of shows they plan to run here. I would have been pretty happy with that show coming to my area. I found most of the show pretty good, ELP/SHO was really good, main event was fun and I enjoyed the undercard, especially putting Suzuki/Despy against the Young Lions.

I don't think it was meant as a direct competition in the way that WCW put Nitro against Raw, or WWE put NXT against Dynamite. I think it just kinda happened to work out that they fell on the same day. I just think once NJPW realized it, they could have booked one or two bigger matches for the show to try to steal some of the viewers at home. Like I said, it wasn't bad by any means, but for example the entire card of Full Gear is still fresh in my mind, whereas even though I watched Showdown I can't remember some of the matches. I totally agree that if that show came to my area, I would have been more tha happy with it.
