I think Jim Ross said it best, "... So I’d say ixnay the chairs cause they look like shit, the spots are wore out and there’s no reason to take a chance in damaging somebody’s brain over a goddamn high-spot or the finish at WrestleMania. It doesn’t make sense to me so I’d say the hell with the chairs, figure out something else and if you can’t, we need to get more creative people involved in solving this problem.”

I enjoy watching a chair shot to the head on old shows from WWF, ECW, FMW and the like. I do, however, cringe and find it irresponsible for anyone to do it in current wrestling. Reason being, all the evidence that is available that points to build up of trauma and concussions. Be safe. Get those hands up. I know you're kind of right but even before the evidence surely we had an idea about the danger of it? Let me put it this way, when my friends and I used to pretend wrestle we used to use those thick cover magazines as chair shots and after taking them my head used to hurt and even we used to talk about how maybe this isn't good for our longterm health and we started to throw our hands up so there was no contact with our heads. Now swap what was only magazines for chairs and even with zero evidence at the time surely they MUST have questioned the long term damage of chair shots?! Of course. They would even say on commentary, things like "scramble your brains" and "kill some brain cells". It helps sell the shot but it works because everyone knows you shouldn't take blows to the head. However, I don't think people realised just how much the build up of smaller impacts to the skull would eventually measure equal to a big damaging blow. Not just weapons either, but high angle suplexes where the bump is taken on the head and neck. Ironically, matches are full of moves like that these days. Again, they are exciting to watch but surely wrestlers and fans alike must be thinking of the long term damage. I wonder if in five to ten years moves like this will be looked at in the same way chair shots to the head are.

They don't bother me at all.
No one forces people to do them, so if a pro wrestler chooses to do that, it's on them.
