Family Guy at one point in time was the funniest thing I had ever seen in my entire life. For years now, people have been saying that it sucks now and is a shell of its former self like The Simpsons. However, I always stood up for it because even though it wasn't as good as it used to be, I would still get a laugh or two from each episode.
About 10 years ago, I completely gave up on the Simpsons because I would go entire seasons without even a chuckle, but kept watching out of habit. I eventually decided to just stop wasting my time. Now, Family Guy has done the same thing. This entire current season, I have not laughed at one single joke. It has felt like a chore to watch every week.
Last night's episode was the final straw. I just tried to watch it on the dvr and it was complete crap.
First off, they did the same exact thing that Simpsons did with "That 90's Show" or whatever the actual episode was titled. We have already gotten the story of how Peter and Lois got together, but now the story is completely thrown out the window. I realize continuity isn't a huge part of the show, but the original story of how Peter and Lois got together was the reasoning behind the relationship Lois had with her parents, and why Peter had such a bad relationship with Lois's parents.
Secondly, doing a Friends parody in 2019 is not exactly cutting edge comedy. The comedy era of making fun of how ridiculous the 90's were has long since come and gone.
Third, it was simply not funny. The joke about Peter mistaking a concert featuring Korn, The Cranberries, and Cake for a feast of some type was stupid. In fact, every joke about the 90's was stupid.
This was so bad that I did something I've never done in the 20 year history or Family Guy: turn off the episode and delete it before I even finished it. I have been literally watching since the show first started, and I will not be watching next week. I have spent money on Family Guy merch, etc. and I never thought this day would come.
I don't really know what I expect out of this thread, or even if I really have an actual point of some type to make. I just wanted to vent about it somewhere.

Both Family Guy and American Dad have been particularly weak in the last two years.

They did a friends episode? lol..I might wanna check that out.
It seems the quality has waned, I genuinely only watch clip compilations online, far easier to digest.

Yeah Family Guy has kind of lost its luster. There's moments now and again that get me a good laugh in the newer episodes but they are too few and far between to watch.

I had no idea it was still in production. I run across reruns playing here and there but I didn’t know the show itself was still going.

Last night was featured one of my biggest animated show pet peeves. The flashback episode where they have all the current secondary characters play the flashback secondary characters. Why not have different characters as friends from New York?

Honestly, the entire 2005-present return of Family Guy has not been as good as the original 3 season run as a whole, despite some better episodes and seasons in the second era. The original era of Family Guy was legit one of the funniest shows I've ever seen. Those 3 seasons were something special, and they still hold up. Pretty much impossible to replicate in greatness, not even by any of the Family Guy seasons from S4-onward.

Both Family Guy and American Dad have been particularly weak in the last two years. Wait, American Dad is still on the air? That had even less to work with than Family Guy did.

Seth MacFarlene should just put all of his energy into The Orville because it's great and because it's not on network anymore he won't be confined by what stories he can tell. It's clear he's lost interest in Family Guy for a long time now.

I had give up on the show a long time ago, and ended up watching the first episode of this season and just found it REALLY terrible.
Maybe it was this bad when I was still watching and my tastes have changed but just found the overlong jokes grating, like they were killing time rather then trying to be funny, and the ending is "resolved" by a cut to the family back at home.

Since it returned to FOX in 2005, I've had several waves of viewing habits when it's come to "Family Guy."
2005-2008 (Seasons 4-6): Appointment viewing. Wherever I am, whatever I'm doing, I stop it all to make sure I'm in front of a television at 9 p.m. for the latest episode. There were even instances where episodes of "Family Guy" would take priority over a Patriots Sunday night game, which feels almost impossible to say now. These three seasons are what I'd consider the apex of the series.
2008-2012 (Seasons 7-10): Actively watching but growing leery of the product. This is about the time when the show became it's most notorious as a pulpit for Seth MacFarlane to preach his views about religion, politics, or whatever other issue he wanted to touch on. It's also when the show may have been at its most grating. While some later episodes were pointless or outright bad, I didn't feel annoyed by them. This era, however, had several episodes where I just rolled my eyes during one of Brian's political/religious rants and thought, "Sheesh, can we get back to the chicken fights already?"
2012-2015 (Seasons 11-13): Not actively watching. If the Sunday Night Football game stinks or if I'm scrolling through and see that it's on or about to start, I'll watch it, but I'm not going out of my way for it anymore. Maybe I'll catch up on demand the next morning, but I'm not making an effort to catch an episode.
2015-present (Seasons 14-now): Completely forgotten. I don't watch, I don't catch up on demand. I've totally forgotten the show exists until a clip pops up on social media or if someone shares a highlight online. I've just lost all interest and I don't see myself regaining it.
But ultimately, "Family Guy" is just like "The Simpsons" in so many ways, but in this one particular way: it'll be on as long as its creator wants to do it. Until the day comes when Seth MacFarlane says he's done with the series, it'll continue. We're on season 18 right now and I honestly don't see an end in sight, until the show plummets below 1 million viewers or until MacFarlane says he's done with it.

I think it’s great.
That said, I didn’t see the very end last night because the football game went long or something, so I missed the tag. Did they address the WTC being in the background of everything?
I didn’t quite get that joke.

Hell, that might not even be the death nell for a show. Matt Stone and Trey Parker WANTED South Park to get cancelled so they and everyone else could move on to other things (as one might wish to do after 23 seasons), but the network had the contractual ability to keep it going despite their wishes (and renew it for an additional season I believe).

I actually really enjoy American Dad
The one thing I dislike the most about modern Family Guy is the:
"I am currently explaining what is gonna be the joke"
*does the joke exactly as was explained*

They need to do a American Dad/ Family Guy crossover. I know they’ve done a clip or two but an actual episode would be cool.
